The Fort

"How much further?" I shouted above the wind whistling in my ears.

"We're almost there!"

We had left earlier that morning. Daniel said we were going to go to The Fort which was apparently the capitol of the first circle. He wouldn't tell me what we would do once we got there, but I'm pretty sure we'd be traveling to another sphere.

"Hey, Myria! You see that castle in the distance? That's where we're heading. I'll need to drop in on Thart to report to him, then we'll leave."

"Leave? Are we leaving this circle?"

"You'll see." Daniel chuckled.

The castle Daniel mentioned loomed high in the sky. It's dark red stone gave it a gloomy appearance and the black banners hanging limp on the pointed roofs was odd. The wind was blowing where we flew, why not there?

"Hey, Daniel. Why aren't those flags waving?"

"It's about time anyways. Come on, Myria. We need to land."

I furrowed my brows I'm confusion as we drifted towards the surface.

"Why?"

"Hmm?"

"Why did we need to land?"

"It's a security measure. There's too much gravity within a mile around the capitol to fly. That way, usurpers can't get through without walking, and it easier to defend the walls and gates instead of everywhere."

"Oh."

We walked on in silence.

"Did you come up with the idea?"

"What? Oh, uh, well, yeah. I guess I did."

"Why are you so modest? You do something incredible, and you take no credit!"

"Sometimes, you don't need to take credit to see what you accomplished. I don't like being in the spotlight-I've never liked it-besides, it's nice to be able to go out and not be swarmed with Fallen." He smiled.

"But don't you want to find a nice little fallen and get married someday?"

He sighed.

"Myria, love is a hard lesson. Once you love someone, once you give them truths, they leave. I did this myself, many, many eons ago. And some can never again be found."

"Are you talking about the other trainee?"

"Yeah. I grew to love her, but now she's gone, and there's nothing I can do."

"Will you tell me her name?"

He took a deep breath, his frame quivering with the exertion it took.

"Myria."

"What?"

"Nothing. Let's go see Thart."

He raced off, dragging me by my hand.

"Slow down!" I scream.

Daniel only laughs and runs faster.

We quickly reach the outer wall. I almost would have ran smack into it, but Daniel stopped me just in time.

"The wall's invisible, see?" He knocked on the wall and a glimmer of black brick appeared out of thin air, quickly retuning back to its former visibility. Or should I say it's former invisibility.

"Why is it like that? Did you do that?"

"No. Thart's wife did. She doesn't like looking at the walls."

He led me along the wall to the eastern gate. I carefully walked through, afraid I'd run into the wall.

We walked through the street. I was surprised to see so many Fallen! Everywhere I looked, Fallen talked, danced, ate, laughed, played. Little children ran past in the streets.

"Will I ever grow up?"

"Well, you aren't like natural Fallen, if that's what you mean. You were created to look like an adult. The only thing that will grow, is your understanding and knowledge." He tapped my head.

"Do natural born need to go through the seeking ceremony?"

"Not until they're fifteen, but that'll be a while. All angels age slowly."

"Oh. How old are you?"

"I'm not telling you." Daniel smiled and tugged me towards the castle.

The dark monolith was hewn of a single, large stone. There weren't any windows, but who knows? Things here are very strange.

Daniel paused at the door and nodded to the two burly Fallen guarding it.

"We're here to see Captain Thart."

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No, but I'm an old friend of his."

"Not many people would stick around for someone like him."

"I'm not many people. Only one."

The guards ushered us in.

"He's on the top floor. You can fly within the fort." He pointed to a circular hole in the ceiling. You could see all of the floors from the one hole.

Daniel motioned for me to follow him and he flew through the hole. I was close behind him as we soared to the top floor. Floor after floor passed, light passing on my face, fade as I climb, show as a new floor revealed itself.

We landed gracefully on the ground of the thirty-ninth floor-I was counting. A chubby, purple-faced demon rushed up to us.

"Master Daniel! You return. Master Thart will be so pleased! I shall go alert him to your arrival." He rasped.

"No need, Harry. I'll go to him myself. I think he needs a surprise."

Harry blinked his pale yellow-blue eyes.

"Of course! Of course! He's in the war room. Just don't be too surprising. A lot has been on his mind lately, what with the demon uprising."

"Yes. I heard about that. I'm so glad you're still loyal, Harry."

"Loyal till the end, Master Daniel. Loyal until the end." Harry bowed.

"Like your father and your father's father. All the way back to your first creation a couple centuries ago."

Harry only smiled and walked away, bowing towards us the entire time.

"Good stock, Harry is. He can go far someday."

I looked at Daniel's smile, finding the corners of my mouth lifting up.

"What?" He glanced at me.

"Nothing. You're just so happy. It feels like I haven't seen you this happy since I arrived."

"Sure." He smirked. "Let's go see Thart."

We learn a little more at a time. So what do you think the lost trainee's name was?

I think it's Franny.
