It was tiring - and very, very boring - flying over the white waste of the eighth circle. The only splashes of color on the white canvas of the eighth circle were Jake and me.
"When will this blankness ever end?" I whine.
"When you shut up!"
"Thats what you said last time! You said there'd
be no secrets between us and that you'd tell me everything!"
"You're right." he sighs. "You just annoy the marbles out of me, okay? We'll be there in a little while, okay?"
I nodded, splayed my arms and legs out, and floated on the gentle breeze. My eyelids drooped and a huge yawn escaped my mouth.
"If you're that bored, then go do something."
"Like what? There's nothing to do!"
"You know, you don't have to stick around. Daniel's still in this sphere. You could go bother him."
My brow furrowed and my frown deepened. "But he never tells me anything! What's that?"
I pointed to a plume of snow in the distance.
"Yes! We're almost there! That, my incomplete friend, is your salvation and new home. That is Flurry, Capitol of the eighth sphere."
"Okay, and why is it my salvation?"
"So you can become complete! Hasn't anyone told you what happens when you aren't complete?"
"No?"
"What a fool Daniel is! Does he not know the fate of those who aren't complete?"
"Isn't Daniel incomplete?"
"In a way, yes, he is incomplete, but he also has the the blessing of the angel council. Something you don't have."
"What do you mean?"
"The blessing of the angel council is where you are given immortality from all things. It's only granted to those who have greatly served angel-kind, like Daniel. I've seen fallen that worship Daniel and have become incomplete. They received agate worse than death. They are given a thousand deaths - all brutal, painful deaths, I might add - there's no way of telling when the deaths will come, some may be only moments apart, others take years or eons. After they die they are given the chance to come back alive, and unlike rebirth, they are given all memories of their past deaths."
"Can they use rebirth before they die?"
"Yeah, but that death doesn't count. Most fallen quit after a couple of the deaths. You only have a few months from the time you were created to become complete and save yourselves."
What do I do? Die a thousand painful deaths or unable to decide your fate? Wait-
"What happens if they do die a thousand deaths?"
"You are given the angel council's blessing."
Okay, a thousand deaths or no freedom to choose your destiny. What should I chose? Daniel would know. He'd help me. But I can't lean on him, he's gone and I need to think for myself. I need to come to a decision. I need to-
"There's also one small insignificant fact I need to mention. You have to marry a complete fallen, preferably the one that will be performing the ceremony, which will be me."
I didn't have time to register what he said before my body stopped working, sending me plummeting towards the ground.
Everything passed before my eyes in a blur. The only thing clear image in my head was so vivid and clear it made my head spin.
Daniel. When did you come back?
I was yanked from my daydream, Daniel's face morphed into Jake's.
"Hey there. I'm a bit new to this 'proposal' thing but I'm pretty sure girls don't fall to the ground. Maybe I should've told you after we landed." He peers into my face, searching for something. "Are you okay? I don't want my bride-to-be to suffer."
My face grew hot, and from my reflection in his eyes, very red too. "I-I'm fine! Just shocked, that's all. Why do I need to m-mar-marry you?"
"The only way for this ceremony to work is for you to be linked to an already complete angel. They utilize the ceremony and banish your 'handicap'."
"Who say I'm going to marry you?" I push him away but he doesn't let go of my hand.
"It's either that or dying! It only needs to be marriage in name."
"W-what if I married Daniel?"
Jake shakes his head."Won't work, he's not complete and you need someone that is. Besides, there wouldn't be enough time to make him love you enough to propose."
"What if I tell him?"
"Still won't. I know as his clone. We are inseparably linked. I know his location and his thoughts, his secrets, what he sees, and I feel his feelings. Frankly, he hates you for causing him so much trouble." He lets go of me.
No! "He kissed me, surely that means something."
"Daniel is clever, he knows you're powerful and he wants to exploit your potential and turn you into his personal, powerhouse slave. He doesn't care about you. I won't do that though, I'll love you."
"I thought I was incomplete." I fold my arms, my wings beating the air just enough to stay afloat.
"It won't matter once you are complete. What do you say? Will you marry me?" He stretches his hand towards me.
"Can I think about it?"
"Of course." His hand drops to his side. "Well, anyways, we need to get going, Flurry awaits us."
