Demi's POV

Nick and I decided that we would have Gracie and Gabe talk to the girls with us. That way, they would get a choice on who their new sister would be.

First we interviewed Gabby. She seemed nice, but she kinda gave me a bad vibe. Nick didn't seem to like her, and Nick likes everybody. She just wasn't right.

Next was Danielle. She was sweet, but too perky for my taste. She absolutely loved the attention. She had an attitude that would get really old, really fast. Gracie liked her, but got bored after a little bit.

The next interview was with Sami. She was extremely tomboyish, and it seemed to me that she would be the type who liked breaking things. She was sweet. Gabe liked her, but she seemed like she could be a bad influence on him. I definitely didn't need that in my house.

Next up was Fiona. She was the youngest of the group, only 10 years old. She was small, almost as small as Gracie, and very skinny. She was really shy, but really sweet. Nick loved her. I did too, but I really need someone who will play with Gracie. She seemed like she would take too long to warm up to her. Gracie seems lonely without another girl to play with since I'm always writing. I guess not.

Next was Emily. She was just a little brat. She didn't say a single nice thing the entire time we were in there. When Gracie said something in her sweet little 4 year old voice, Emily just said "What are you, stupid?" I can't have that around my kids. It's just not right.

Then there was CeCe. As the oldest, she felt she should be in charge of everyone. Everyone. Including Nick and me. She seemed like she had really good leadership skills, but she felt like she needed to use them at all times. It got old really fast. Someone will adopt her. Other than the fact that she was bossy, she was really sweet.

Eden and Emma were interviewed together. They couldn't even be apart at all for more than a minute without breaking down completely. I'm actually guessing that they have an anxiety disorder that causes severe separation anxiety. They needed some help with that. I'll let Mrs. Karey know after the interviews. They loved the kids. They were really sweet, but I just don't think I can handle 4 kids. I'll let Mrs. Karey know about their anxiety.

Dylan was next. For a 13 year old, she knew too much. She had a dirty mind and a dirty mouth. She was like me, but I never cussed in front of my 4 year olds! She was a bad influence, and Gracie and Gabe definitely don't need that.

Kaitlyn. She's, happy. Very happy. Which is great, but I'm not. Her being happy all the time is just going to make me even sadder. She'll definitely get adopted someday, just not by me. For my own mental health's sake.

Victoria had an attitude. That's it. She was snobby. That's just it. She gave me attitude the whole time we were talking. Gracie started repeating everything she said. I can't let that be near my kids.

Mac. Mac's... different. She's hard to figure out. She seemed really sweet. She didn't talk that much. She just answered the questions I asked her. She really loved Gracie, though. Gracie liked her a lot. I did too. Maybe she'll be coming home with us...

When Mac left the room, Nick and I knew exactly who we wanted to adopt. Gracie and Gabe wanted the same thing. We walked out of the room am I said to Mrs. Karey "We'd like to adopt Mac." She smiled. "Also, I just want you to know that Eden and Emma have an anxiety disorder. It would probably be best for them if they went into a treatment center for a little while," I said, and handed her $500. "That should cover the cost of both of them and you should have some left over to buy the girls new clothes." I make a lot of money writing songs for Hollywood. "Thank you so much," Mrs. Karey said. I smiled at her as she leaned down and got the paperwork needed to adopt Mac. I signed at everywhere needed and she said, "Okay, I guess that's it. Mackenzie Rae Lovato is officially your daughter." "Great," I said. "I'll go get her." And I did. I went upstairs and fount the only room with the door closed and knocked.

Mac's POV

About 5 minutes after I went back to my room absolutely positive that Ms. Lovato wasn't going to adopt me, I heard a knock on my bedroom door. I was the only girl in the home who had a room to myself because I was the only one who wanted one. The other girls who don't have anyone who is the same age as them usually just stay in a room with the girls a year younger than them, but 13 year olds are way different than 14 year olds. And there's no way I'm staying with the 15 year olds. They're bossy and snobby. Not my type. Plus I just don't like people. Anyway, I heard a knock on my door. I ran to hide my blades and tried to yell "Come in," but it came out as more of a squeak. The door opened slowly and I saw Ms. Lovato's face. I was really surprised she was even coming to see me, even if it was just to tell me she wasn't adopting me. "Hey, Mac," she said. "How's it going?" "Okay," I croaked. "You?" "Okay," she responded. "So, I'm here to tell you something." Great. She's breaking my heart herself. Wonderful. "I'm adopting you." "What?" I managed to squeak. I was shocked beyond comprehension. I guess she could see it in my face, because she said, "Why are you so surprised?" "Um..." I said. I couldn't even comprehend my own thoughts. "Nevermind," she said. "Just get your stuff together. So I did. I grabbed my pillow and blanket and Fleecie (my stuffed lamb that I think my dad gave me before my mom dropped me off at the home) and my denim backpack that had everything else that I owned in it. I suddenly realized what I was wearing. I had on a gray t-shirt, dark denim overalls, and my super worn out oversized dark gray hoodie. I decided that since they were the only shoes I owned, I would put on my too-big hand-me-down black converse high tops from Mrs. Karey. I put them on and put in my backpack and walked over next to Ms. Lovato. "Ready?" she asked. "I guess, Ms. Lovato," I responded. She quickly responded, saying, "Please, call me Demi, or, if you're comfortable, Mom, but anything but Ms. Lovato. That's just for business." She smiled at me and offered me her hand. I smiled back but shoved my hands in the pocket of my hoodie. She just put her hand by her side and we walked out to the car.

The car ride home only took about 15 minutes, but it seemed like an eternity. It was awkwardly quiet and as soon as we got home, I jumped out of the car and ran inside. Demi came in after me and said, "Here, let me show you your room. It's a little late, so if you want to shower, you can, and dinner will be served in around an hour. If you're not hungry, you can just go to sleep after your shower, but you do have to eat breakfast tomorrow. Anyway, here's you room." She gestured to a closed door and I opened it. The room was huge! At least twice the size of my room at Shadow Creek! The bed looked like it was a queen size. My old one was a twin. "Thanks," I croaked. "This is great." "We can decorate it later if you want," Demi said. "And I'm definitely taking you clothes shopping tomorrow. Do you have any pajamas?" I shook my head no. "Alright, you can borrow mine, but they're going to be really big. I can wash your clothes overnight if you want," she said. I clutched my hoodie. She looked at me with a confused look on her face. "Or just your overalls and t-shirt?" She asked. I nodded. "Great," she replied. "The bathroom is just down the hall, um, there's shampoo and conditioner in there, and I think you're all set. What do you want for pajamas? Does a t-shirt and sweatpants work?" I nodded. "Okay," she replied. "You're awfully quiet, huh." I shrugged. "Oh well," she remarked. "You'll be talking by the end of the week in this family." I had to smile at that. "If you need anything, my room's right next door. Oh, and jut so you know, Nick doesn't live with us, but he will soon. We recently got engaged and we're getting married in April. So for now it's just you, me, Gracie, and Gabe. I'm ordering Chinese for dinner of you aren't too tired," she said. Demi talks a lot. I'm sure I'll get used to it. I really like Demi.

A.N.

Okay REALLY LONG update.

My name's Jay.

I need input.

Do you like the story?

Do you like the characters?

Do you have any suggestions as to what happens?

Anyway, I'll try to update as much as possible, but with school and homework and choir and theatre, I don't have much time, but I love to write, so I'll probably have an update up at least 3 times a week. If not more. There will probably be a lot of really long chapters. I hope that's okay.
