I get to the Café early the next morning, around 6. Louis comes with me this time, and sits down at a table with a cupcake as I try my hand at biscuits again. Nonna gave me this recipe, and it was Matty’s favourite. I sigh, staring at the photos on the wall. Matty, Harper, Louis, Kat and I standing out the front of the café, the day we bought it.

“Stepho. Make me a milkshake.” Louis calls from the table area.

“Honestly, Louis. How do you not know how to make a milkshake by now.”

“You never showed me!” He argues, jumping onto the counter.

“Come here then, dweeb.” I smile, showing him the milkshake maker.

He puts all the ingredients in himself, and about ten times the amount of Chocolate flavouring needed.

Louis takes the glass and goes to sit down.

“How is it?” I say, as I organise the shelves.

“Better than yours!” I shake my head, smiling.

“Well, if it’s better than mine, you can make it yourself from now on.”

“Fine!” He sighs. “Yours is a tiny bit better than mine.”

“Good choice, buddy.” I take the tray of iced chocolate cupcakes and put them on the shelves.

Two shelves of cupcakes, one of slices, and one of full cakes – Harper’s idea.

We have another one to the other side of the till. That’s full of pastries and pies, which I’m quite good at making, if I do say so myself.

Louis moves over to the radio and turns it on, the radio announcer in the middle of a conversation with his co-host. “So there’s a new band on the scene, right out of our town, Manchester! The 1975 are a band consisting of frontman Matty, George, Ross and Adam. What would you call them, Lisa? Rock?”

“Parker, I would say they are alternative pop with a hint of rock. Not really my type of music, but their songs are so catchy!”

I look over to Louis, who is poking at his cupcake, a sad smile on his face. I place the new tray of cupcakes down, and look at the radio.

“Their song ‘Girls’ will be on next, for all you fans out there!” The man of whom I assume is ‘Parker’ says, just as the familiar tune of Girls comes on. I smile, as I remember Matty and George writing this in our basement.

“Louis, you wanna take some cupcakes home for Rosie?”

He shrugs. “Yeah, whatever. When is she picking me up?”

“Whenever she wakes up.” I grin. Louis laughs.

Kat comes through the door, twirling her car keys in between her fingers.

I groan. “God, Kat. We get it, you bought a new car.” I smile.

“Dude, you’d be doing the same thing right now!” She messes up Louis’ hair.

“True.” Louis agrees, smoothing his hair back.

“Why do I smell biscuits?” She says, squinting at me.

“I made some.” I point at the glass-covered shelves near the counter.

She looks at them, and looks back up at me. “Not bad, Stepho.”

“Not bad? They’re the best I’ve done!” I say, putting the sausage rolls into the shelves.

Suddenly, 5 frantic boys begin knocking on our door. I sigh, opening it.
