“Steph, seriously, you know I love you but you need to stop.”

It was around 2 am, the concert had been finished for a while. I lie on Luke’s couch, his back pressed against it, and my back pressed against him.

“I can’t help it. It’s Abed! Oh my god, I can’t even handle this right now.” I say, pointing at the TV screen.

I had taken George’s advice and put on Captain America: The Winter Solider. Luckily, neither of us had seen it before.

Matty walks into the room, and stares at Luke. “What are you guys doing?”

“Watching Cap’n sort shit out.” I say, smiling over at him and pausing the movie.

He rolls his eyes. “We’re wanting to go out..but Harper and Kat say you have work tomorrow so they don’t want to.”

I bite my lip. “Tell them they can go. I’ll go into work. Nonna’s the only customer on a Sunday anyway.”

“Nonna?” His eyes brighten. “Could I come?”

I smile. “Of course you can come. We have to get there at 8, that’s at the latest. Nonna’s usually there at 8:30 on a Sunday.”

He nods. “Can we see Louis after?”

My phone starts to ring, Childish Gambino’s 3005 blasts through my pocket.

I answer it. “Hello?”

“Hey Stepho.”

“Louis, what the hell are you doing awake?”

“Rose is asleep..I was just wanting to speak to Matty.”

I sit up, looking over at Matty. “I’ll see if he wants to.”

“Matty?” I hold the phone away from my face. “Louis wants to talk to you.”

“What the hell is he doing up at 2am for that shit?” He says, walking over and taking the phone from me, and leaving the room.

“Gosh, I hope he doesn’t see my Luke Hemmings pictures folder.” I joke. Luke looks up at me, amused.

“Bullshit you have a folder. Do you have a folder, really?”

“Of course I don’t. My pictures are basically photos of my dog and car.”

“You have a dog?”

“I used to. He lives with Nonna now. His name is Rocky.”

“Why Rocky?”

“A$AP Rocky. Matty’s favourite album of last year. He’s a Sharpei.”

“Makes sense. Cool name though.”

“Yeah.” I pause. “We got him after Pip died.”

Matty walks back into the room, and hands me my phone. “Louis says hi. He’s going to bed now, I told him off.”

“Good. It seems he only listens to you.” I say.

“Luke, can I just talk to her for a minute?” Matty says, moving over to the couch.

“Of course.” He replies. “Call me when you’re done, yeah?”

I nod at him and smile. God, his eyes kill me.

After Luke leaves, Matty sits next to me.

“I just think we need to talk. We haven’t spoken in who knows how long. But, I just wanted you to know that I left to help us out. I was in a dark stage in my life, and Louis nor you should have seen that. That was partly why I left. Another reason is, I love music. Like you are obsessed with cars, and football, that was the only thing I had.” He takes my hand in his. “Listen. Dad left me something too. Neither of you saw it. It was a guitar that his friend left him when he died. Inside, was a note. From Mum and Dad. I still remember what it said;

Never, ever think we weren’t proud of you Matty. You’re going to do magnificent things in this world. We’re so sorry we won’t be there to witness it. Just remember; we love you. The world will eventually love you. Take care of your sister and brother. Marry that girl. Never, ever regret anything in life. Go out into the world and do whatever shit makes you happy (apart from murder). We’re always going to be with you. We love you. Mum and Dad. X”

I hear his voice crack, and I pull him into a hug.

“God, Matty. I didn’t know.”

“I know you didn’t.” He says, snapping back into normal Matty. “No one did. Not even George. It’s my motivation. And I regret not being there while Louis grew up. I didn’t even get to see you grow up..”

“Matty, you’re not our dad. You don’t need to see us grow up. You just need to see us. We can Skype. Just know, that since you’re happy, we’re happy. God, we see you on TV and you’re so excited, and we love it. Be our older brother. We don’t need looking after, we’ve got Nonna for that. We need our older brother.”

He smiles. “I can’t wait to see them tomorrow.”

“I know. But if I was you, I’d go have a sleep. You look tired as fuck.”

“That’s just the weed.” He smirks at me, and gives me a last hug. “Be careful with Luke. He is infatuated with you, yes. But just make sure you can reciprocate those feelings. And just remember, he’s in a band. He’ll be touring. Do you have that much trust?”

I bite my lip. “I-I think so. But right now, I don’t know if he honestly likes me. I mean, we’re friends now, but does he like me more than that?”

“You’ll have to find that out for yourself.”

Rocky on the side, for you dog lovers. x
