I sit on Luke’s couch, my legs over his own. We have another two hours until their performance, apparently the boys wanted us to get here earlier so we would ‘settle in’.

“Matty doesn’t know you’re here.” Harry says, looking over at me. Harper and Kat had just gone to the toilet, but I know they’ll be gossiping.

“What do you mean?” I sit up slightly. “I thought he planned this whole thing out?”

“He did, kinda. He asked me to go to your bakery and give you his number, but instead I convinced you to come.”

“So, hang on. Matty is here, but he doesn’t know I’m here?”

“Yep.” Harry sits down on the couch next to ours.

“Fuck.” I mutter. “He can’t see me before his performance. He can’t. It’ll fuck everything up.”

Luke pats my leg. “Steph, it’ll be fine. I promise.”

His blue eyes just prove his sincerity. I sigh, then remember something.

“Oh my god, I’m so silly. I left something in my car. Luke, will you come with me to get it?”

“Uh, sure.” Luke stands up with me, and we leave a very confused Harry laying down on the sofa.

I laugh, running down the corridors, Luke following close behind. “Are you gonna tell me what you actually left in your car?” He calls. I slow down my run, letting him catch up as I come to a stop. I lean up to his ear, my hands resting on his shoulders. “I brought cupcakes.”

“Chocolate ones?” He says, his hands resting on my waist. I smile and nod.

“Yep.”

“Well, why the fuck did we stop running?” He grins, beginning to run again.

He beats me to the car, which is expected. He’s wearing Vans for god sake.

“Luke! That’s not fair. I was winning.” I pout and he laughs.

“Next time..” He looks me dead in the eyes. “Don’t stop.”

This, with us both being 2 year olds, sends us into hysterics.

After we had calmed down, we jump into the car, lock the doors as a precaution, I mean, we don’t want Harry breaking in and eating our cakes.

I take the white box and hand it to Luke, watching as he grabs it like a small child.

He takes the first one out of the box, examines it, and hands it to me.

“Here you are, my queen.” He says in a fancy accent. I laugh and take it from him.

“Thank you, sire.” I start to unpeel the wrapper. “Well, if I’m queen, what are you?”

“I’ve always liked power and pretty girls, so I’m going to have to say King.”

I smile at him and take a bite into my cupcake.

I don’t know how long we were in that car for, but I didn’t want it to end. I don’t even know what we talked about, probably everything.

“We should probably go, ya know, if I want to perform.” He jokes.

“Oh, I forgot I was sitting with a world famous boy band member.” I say, stepping out of the car.

We walk back to the building, hand in hand again. Honestly, I could get used to this.

But that’s stupid. I mean, he’s probably leaving soon. They’re all on a tour. No point in getting attached, because he could find another girl in the next town.

Why am I getting so fucking obsessed about Luke’s interest in girls? It’s so stupid, I need to get my mind off it.

And I think the only thing that could do that is seeing Matty.

Apparently I spoke too soon, because as we are walking behind the stage, The 1975 turns the corner.

I see Matty, and he looks at me, the jacket, and Luke. He looks so fucking tired. So different to the 22 year old that used to play random songs in his basement.

He lets out a breath and pulls me into a hug. The type of bone-crushing hug that a big brother gives you. The type of hug I’ve been wanting for two years.

And I don’t know what comes over me, but I feel myself start to cry. He knows I do, and just hugs me tighter.

“Can we just have a minute, boys?” Matty’s voice echoes above me. His voice has gotten deeper, raspier.

“Matty, I-I was so worried. Louis misses you, Nonna is slowly losing it too, I think.”

“Shh.” He says, putting my hair behind my ears. “Listen, Stepho, I missed you so goddamn much. But if I see you cry, I won’t be able to go on tonight. Smile, just smile. You can stand on the side of the stage, or in Luke’s dressing room and just watch us. Please, I’m here now. And I swear to God, I’m not leaving again.”

I nod, wiping away my tears. I grin at him, looking at his hair. It’s gotten longer, and the hairstyle that I grew to love was still there. I mess it up slighty, knowing how much that annoys him.

“Steph.” He groans, flipping it back into shape.

“I love you. Alright?” He puts both hands on my cheeks, searching my eyes. “You’re never gonna be alone again.”

“I love you too, Matty.” I smile, pulling my tongue out at him.

“Boys?” He calls, before looking back to me. “Is your friend, Harper, still hot as fuck?”

I roll my eyes. “Yep.”

“Good, because George and I wrote a song about you and her.”
