Chapter 5

Ace eyed my outstretched hand as if it were a trap, before finally taking it and pulling himself off the wall. I withdrew my hand after his body was a fair distance from the wall, before the feeling of his hand in mine gave me any ideas.

He chuckled from behind me, finally looking genuine as opposed to calculating.

“All right Celina,” he spoke. “Let’s see if you can keep up.”

With that, Ace sped off in a blur, leaving me in the alley with that unconscious human for only a split second before I was after him with a desire to out-do him swelling in my chest. I kept up easily, darting through back roads and alleys, making sure to stay behind him. Once I had an idea of where he was leading me, I turned from following with a smirk on my face and pushed my speed to its maximum. I sped around the opposite side of a few buildings before coming back to the route Ace was running, and leaning against the outside of a building he was approaching. I feigned a yawn and looked pointedly at him.

“Took you long enough,” I taunted.

Ace scowled but not before he could hide the impressed look on his face. I knew he was accustomed to being one of the fastest. However, I was faster. I shrugged of the wall and took up step with Ace as he continued to lead me to his coven’s headquarters.

It had been around a year now that I’d been on my own, and I never missed being around my own kind, mostly because I didn’t allow myself to think about the friends I’d left behind: Favian, Scarlet, and the life I’d led in my previous coven. But running through the city under the cover of darkness with Ace was so natural. Whatever I’d made myself believe before, it was unnatural for a vampire to be away from their own kind. I missed this. Ace was bringing me back to my nature, and I wasn’t exactly resisting. Ace himself was cocky and young, but he was the first contact I’d had with vampires in a while.

As we made our way on I saw him pushing a little harder trying to gain distance between us. Like I said before: he was cocky. Something about it just irked me. What was it again? Oh yeah, his ego. He thought he was good? Well he just stumbled onto one of the best, and I was eventually going to prove it.

Finally, we slowed as we neared a corner. In the back of my mind, I contemplated the fact that Ace may be leading me into a trap. However I wasn’t worried; I could take whoever could be waiting if they were all like Ace.

"Here we are," he said as we turned the corner. A huge brick building stood looming over us. It looked like maybe an abandoned apartment building. I eyed Ace skeptically.

"This is what you call a mansion?" I asked dubiously. Was he kidding?

At the door, Ace entered a code on the pad lock and it clicked open.

We entered the building and I was shocked to see the inside was... Nice. More then nice, it was gorgeous. It may have been an old apartment complex, but most of the walls on the first floor were knocked out. It was very open, and painted a dark grey color. There were couches and chairs, all black leather with white and blood red pillows decorating them. There was a huge flat screen TV and a large warm fireplace. It held a very homelike feel for me. But I could barely look at my surroundings long, as there were probably around 15 vampires in front me, gazing at me with varying expressions.

But one face in particular caught my attention.

"Celina?"

I couldn't believe my eyes. Was I dreaming?

"Scarlet?"
