Chapter 9
Exhausted, I was plunged into the depths of unconsciousness. But dreams were unkind to me.
Even in my state of sleep, I knew what was coming. The nightmares always came, every night since… Emil’s incident. I dreamt of that night almost every time I closed my eyes.
“I love you,” Emil said to me, an adoring look on his face as we walked down the sidewalk of the city at night.
I leant into him as he wrapped his arm around my waist.
“You know I love you, too,” I said to him.
The hundreds of people on the crowded streets thinned out as we walked down some side streets leading to his apartment. But I heard faint footsteps still walking the same path as us. I was too caught up in Emil’s blue eyes to notice I didn’t hear any beating hearts.
When we turned down another deserted side street, two dark figures walked towards us from the opposite side of the road. I narrowed my eyes, finally realizing something wasn’t right. I felt Emil tense next to me, a human reaction to seeing predators like the vampires coming our way. I glanced behind me, remembering the light footsteps I heard before. Three more tall men were some twenty feet behind us: no heart beating, no pulse, and dead. No, not dead, just not living.
I tensed ready to run. I squeezed Emil’s hand, letting him know that this wasn’t safe. For the first time in too long, I felt something rush through me.
Fear.
But the fear wasn’t for myself; it was fear for Emil’s life. And if not for his life, then for his well-being. It suddenly struck me how stupid I’d been. I couldn’t be with a human. Not only was it illegal in my world, it wasn’t safe for him. He could get hurt. And if I fought these vampires off, I would probably scare him off.
I pulled Emil behind me as the five vampires approached us from both sides.
“Oh, Celina,” One said patronizingly to me. “I thought you would know the law, you were around to see it written.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I replied icily.
“Oh but I think you do. My friends and I, we just saw you two walking down the road. And it’s quite clear to us that he’s more to you than just the next meal,” he sneered. Relief washed through me that no one else knew; they weren’t sent by someone, they just witnessed my err. Well they can be easily disposed of.
“Ah, well…” I sighed. I felt my fangs extend in my mouth. I grinned manically, showing my fangs. They took this as a sign and charged us. I pushed Emil towards the door towards his apartment building. Go, I urged him through my mind.
All five of them came flying at me, expecting that I wouldn’t be able to defend myself against all of them. Wrong.
I grabbed the first one, the one that spoke to me, by the shirt and bared my fangs at his neck. His friends paused, clearly catching the message: “Move and he dies.”
The leader elbowed me in the stomach with inhuman strength, and I stumbled backwards, releasing him. But I wasn’t going down without a fight.
