The dreaded birthday meal was in an hour, Rue’s mum had sent her off to her room to get ready, but right now all Rue wanted to do was lie in bed and read. That was her ideal birthday. She knew she had to get ready soon; her mum would drag her out the house by her ears for this meal, even if she wasn’t presentable.
With half an hour to go, she though it time to get a quick wash and change out of her leggings and tee, into the dress her mum had bought for her. She pinned her fringe back out of her face and had to admit, she looked good! The dress nipped in at the waist and flared at the hips, she was thankful it was tie dye and nothing too girly. She never had been one for the usual floral prints or lace detailing most girls her age wore.
Cole wandered into her room, and stopped in his track, utterly perplexed by what she was wearing. Never in a million years did he think Rue would put on that dress. She was always complaining about dresses: ‘they show too much flesh’, or ‘I feel half naked’. Rue spotted Coles surprised reflection in the mirror and instantly looked down to check her dress wasn’t tucked in her underwear or something he wasn’t sure what.
Cole burst out laughing ‘There’s nothing stuck to your butt... promise!’ he laughed.
‘What’s wrong? See through? Too short?’ She was panicking now, she had no skirts she could put over the top if it was too short!
‘Nothing, I’m just extremely surprised you didn’t go down without a fight. I was expecting to come in and see you huddled in the corner, refusing to put that dress on!’ still laughing like there’s no tomorrow. ‘So unlike you, little sis.’
Rue punched his arm playfully ‘I can wear a dress once without it killing me... but I really do feel half naked... Boxers that’s what I need, can I have a pair?’ she realised he was not going to lend her a pair today with that look.
‘No way, you don’t need any with that dress on, no one will be looking up it. And if they do, they’ll have me to answer to!’ playfully patting her head.
She laughed at the impossibility of this but added seriously, ‘what if it’s windy and it blows up!’
‘Then you will look even more stupid with ‘I heart girls’ boxers on.’
‘Of course I won’t because I will be wearing you batman pair.’ She added victoriously.
‘Don’t think so’ he grinned. To prove his point he yanked down one side of his pants showing one butt cheek of batman boxers. Rue was so jealous; she knew how comfortable those things were, rather than the girl boxers she usually wore. She pouted in defeat.
‘I s’pose you could let me wear your SpongeBob pair then.’ She sighed, SpongeBob is no were near as good as batman.
‘Nope, no way. You have no need for my boxers, they will only make your hips look odd. If you hold your bag at your front you shouldn’t have any problem with your dress.’ Hoping to annoy her, but offer help at the same time. After all it was her birthday.
‘But what about the back?’ she looked shocked.
