chapter one.
C L O S E D FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY. WILL BE BACK OPEN FOR BUSINESS
M O N D A Y J U L Y 6.Annoyance made its way into my body as I read the sign hanging outside of my father's pawn shop. He was always open for the Fourth of July and every other holiday aside from Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Labor Day. What's changed?
I've been trying to get in contact with him for some time about some things that needed to be settled, but I was never able to get through to him. He didn't answer my calls or texts. I wanted to be mature and not have to come up to his place of business to handle personal issues, but I felt I had no other choice and to see that his shop is closed left me feeling defeated.
I had no way of reaching him. I had no idea where he lived and I'm convinced that he changed his phone number so that it would be nearly impossible to get in contact from him. But to be totally honest, he has a habit of not taking care of his responsibilities. I'd know because he walked out on me and my mom and my brother when I was only four years old. He was gone and came back nearly four years later. At that point, he was just always popping in and out of our lives whenever it was convenient for him. Nothing with him was ever permanent, but that's a different story for a different day. Right now I needed for him to pay me back my damn money.
Apparently, something happened in his shop and he wound up getting into a fist fight with a customer. The police arrived and he was put in jail until his bail could be paid. Long story short, despite our rocky past, he was still my father and me having a heart, I bailed him out. He promised to pay me back. That was four months ago and now I want my shit.
What a mistake I've made, but you live and you learn, right? I've learned that you just can't trust these damn men, not even your own father.
I walked back down the street to my car so that I could drive back home and relax after this exhausting day of running errands. In the morning I got my hair straightened, then I went to the grocery store to pick up some food and house hold supplies my mom asked me to get.
Twenty-five minutes later, I made my way across town and as I was pulling up to the house, I noticed my brother's car and a car I wasn't familiar with in the driveway, forcing me to have to park on the street.
I got out of my car and started walking to the door while retrieving my keys from my purse. I got them out then unlocked and opened the door to see three guys in the middle of the living room playing the PS4 that was set up and making a lot of damn noise. There was food and drinks all over the coffee table and the smell of weed lingered in the air.
"What in the hell is going on in here?" I spoke directing my attention to my older brother Jaden.
"Uriah can't you see I got company? Go take your ass to your room or something. Better yet, make yourself useful and go make us some more food." he snickered earning a laugh out of my ex-step brother Malik (who I hate with every fiber in my being) and silence from the third guy that I've never seen before. I noticed he had light brown, curly hair and a rich caramel skin complexion. He had full lips and nice, thick eyebrows.
I took my attention off of the guy to get ready and curse out my brother.
"Nigga don't try to play me in front of your little friends. Wait, why the hell are you even here?"
"Damn, I can't visit my mom and my little sis for a week or two?"
"A week or two? J, don't bullshit me. You live only 15 minutes away with a girlfriend and a son, so why exactly are you staying here?"
"I fucked up and she kicked me out the apartment for a while," he shrugged
"You are so dumb," I spoke truthfully while rolling my eyes. This isn't the first time he's gotten kicked out and had to stay here like a little ass boy. He was 23, almost 24 and he needed to get his shit together. Instead of playing video games, he needed to be trying to make amends with his girl.
"Well how long is your company going to be here?"
"They'll be gone by 8 o'clock. I promise."
I sighed. "Whatever, where's mommy?"
I walked further into the house, taking off my shoes and sitting my purse on the dining room table.
"She went out to dinner with Aunt Lizette."
"Oh okay. Cool. Well I'm going up to my room, don't be making a bunch of noise," I spoke grabbing my purse and heading to the steps.
"I got you," Jaden says.
"Damn sis, you not going to show no love?" Malik spoke. He was just trying to be real smart because he knows I dont like him like that.
"It's Uriah to you, and no because you know I don't like you," I spat.
He just laughs at my comment, he's used to my rude remarks and insults. "Aw, okay Uriah. I see how it is."
"Come on Uriah, it's the Fouth of July, you should be happy," Jaden remarks.
"Actually I'm really annoyed right now." I just rolled my eyes and continued to the steps.
I caught whose name I still didn't know staring at me and looking me up and down, so I stared back at him, but he never said a word.
