chapter nine.
Jaden sat on his couch with his head in his hands. The incident that happened with his sister just two weeks ago weighed heavily on his mind. He felt like an idiot. How had he not noticed the signs? All the times he heard her crying in her room and all the bruises from her "falling" or "bumping" into things. He couldn't believe he'd trusted that mother fucker Kendrick. He treated him as a brother because he knew how much Uriah loved him, but come to find out she was being abused by him. He felt betrayed not only by Kendrick, but by the fact that his own sister wouldn't tell him about the problems in her life. At the same time, though, he felt like a failure. He was supposed to be her older brother and protect her like their father never did. He felt horrible about the fact that while his sister was in the hospital and his girlfriend was taking care of his son, he was out fucking some woman named Keira.
"So what the fuck you gonna do about this shit, Jaden," Don asked harshly. He was extremely frustrated. The girl he had a strong liking for was hurting, while her abuser was just gone somewhere on his merry way.
"I want to find him and kill his ass, but that wouldn't be the right thing to do."
"Why not?"
Don's question took Jaden by surprise. He wondered why he felt so passionate about the situation. "You feel some type of way about my sister or something man?"
"Yes I do to be honest, and when I saw her half dead on the side walk it put me into my old savage mind set. I really like her, and to see her laid out like that was some fucking bullshit! That bitch ass nigga beat her down like she's a fucking man!" Don felt so furious. Fuck pressing charges, he thought. He wouldn't mind having Kendrick's blood on his hands.
"I feel you one-hundred percent. Thank you again man because you really saved my sister's life. We need to find that nigga. Pronto."
They pulled up in front of the house in Jaden's car. "Go in there and check on her. I got some business to handle concerning Kendrick. Take care of her, and tell her that I love her. I'll be back later."
"Alright, J. Be safe." They gave each other dap before Don got out of the car and headed to the front door. He rung the door bell twice waiting for Uriah to come and answer it. A few moments later, the door opened but it wasn't her who answered.
"Hey, can I help you?" Some Hispanic looking chick answered the door and Don looked at her wondering who the hell she was.
"I'm Don. I'm here to see Uriah."
"Hold on just a sec. Let me let her know that you're here first. I'm Jennifer, by the way."
He nodded not really not interested. He didn't give a fuck about who the Jennifer girl was he just wanted to see Uriah and find out how she was holding up.
Jennifer came back and opened the door wider so that he could step in. "She upstairs in her room. She said she wants to speak with you alone."
Don went up the steps and walked until he arrived at Uriah's door. I lightly knocked on the door, then heard her soft voice allowing him to come in. He opened the door and saw her. Uriah was sitting up in her bed with a white over sized t-shirt on and black tights. She had a blank facial expression and she seemed kind of spaced out.The bruises on her face were starting to fade, but still visible nonetheless. Seeing her like that instantly made him angry, but he had to keep his composure for her. He could visibly see the cut on her lip, but it was healing. Overall, she definitely looked better than how she looked when he picked her up that day. It hurt him to see such a pretty woman in that state.
"Hey," he greeted her and shut the door behind him.
"Come here," she said quietly. Uriah beckoned him over by patting the empty space beside her on her bed.
He slowly walked over to her bed and sat down. It was quiet between them and he was shocked when he felt her arms wrapped around him. "Thank you, Don. You saved my life," she cried.
Slowly he wrapped his arms gently, but securely around her because he knew that she was still sore and didn't want to hurt her.He didn't want to let her go. "Jaden says he loves you. He'll be over here soon to check up on you."
Uriah pulled away from Don after hearing his words. "Please stop filling his head about doing something to Kendrick. Please. He was just angry and I know he has issues, but we love each other and--"
"Enough!" Don shouted shooting up from the bed. Her words were infuriating him to the point of no return. How could she say those things? That motherfucker didn't love her. He was nothing but a weak pussy that liked to take advantage of women.
"That nigga almost beat you to death and the best thing you can say is that bullshit?" He saw tears well up in her eyes and her lip began to quiver. He didn't want to make her cry, but damn it,she needed to hear the truth.
"He beat you to a fucking pulp, and you think he loves you? It's because of him that you're not carrying your baby anymore! If he loved you he would've never put his hands on you and if he loved you and valued life he wouldn't have caused you to lose your child."
"Stop shouting at me! He didn't know I was pregnant! Nobody fucking knew!" Uriah screamed with tears coming down her face. She was in denial and she knew it, but it was just so hard for her to face the facts.
"Your so damaged that you don't even realize it, Uriah." He gently grabbed her arm and brought her over to her full length mirror.
"Look at your face." She turned her head around. Why would she want to see herself battered?
He grabbed her chin and turned her head so that she could see herself. "Look at your fucking face. What do you see?"
She studied herself and didn't like what she was seeing. He lifted up her shirt, exposing her stomach revealing the bruises there. "Is this the love that you speak of Uriah? Did he really love you when he put his hands on you?"
She was silent. "This isn't love!" he exclaimed. He needed to get his message through her head. He knew that she was in denial and this was the only way for her to understand. She examined her busted lip and the bruises around her face. Something suddenly clicked I'm her brain and she nodded.
"You're right. He never loved me. I'm just stupid and I'm fucking weak." A tear rolled down her face as she frowned.
"You're neither. You're just another woman looking for love in the wrong places. You just have some changes to make in your life."
She nodded in understanding. Don sighed in relief because he was happy that he finally got through to her. They stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity. Uriah found herself getting lost in those beautiful eyes of his. Don couldn't help it when he brought his lips down to hers a gave her a soft, tender kiss. He pulled away when he realized what he had done.
"I'm sorry," he apologized he couldn't just go around kissing her after all that's happened and he was pretty certain that she felt nothing for him. He figured maybe she just needed a friend.
But he was wrong. Ever since she first saw laid eyes on him she was interested, but fought her feelings because she knew that Kendrick would beat her ass if he ever caught her talking to another guy.
"Don't be." Uriah walked back over to her bed and sat down, and Don sat right back down next to her. She began thinking about all of the things Kendrick has put her through. Endless beatings, killing their child and everything else. She allowed a man to damage her physically and mentally all because she was afraid to leave. She was so angry at herself. She felt something rising within her. She was a woman scorned and she wanted revenge, and she wouldn't stop until she got it. Kendrick needed to pay for everything that he's put her through.
"Where's your mom?" Don asked.
She completely evaded his question by asking, "Do you know where I could purchase a gun?"
Jennifer sat downstairs watching tv waiting for Kendrick to reply to her text message after listening to Don and Uriah's whole conversation. Her phone finally vibrated after ten minutes of waiting and she looked at her cellphone to see that it was him.
