chapter eleven.
The month of August was soon coming to a close, but that didn't stop the intensity of the heat one bit. It was a Saturday and nobody really had anything to do. Donovan and Jaden decided to meet up to play basketball at one of the neighborhood parks. Considering everything they've got going on in their lives and the situation concerning Uriah, they needed to do something to have a little fun and take their minds off of things.
After playing a few games with some random guys they met, they both sat down on the ground beside each other to talk. Don removed his shirt and used it to wipe off the seat that was trickling down his forehead while Jayden gulped down a whole bunch of water.
"You hear anything about Kendrick?" Don asked after a few moments.
Jaden sighed. "Nah not really, man. I went by his house and it's obvious his ass went ghost. I been asking people about him and they say they ain't seen him neither. Ain't that some shit?" he spoke, clearly agitated. He had no idea where he could be.
Don didn't like the news he was hearing at all. As he took in Jaden's words, he stared up at the sky, squinting because the sun was so bright.
"I don't know man, maybe we should just get the police involved. Dude clearly is no where to be found and I ain't no damn detective." Don stared looking over at Jaden.
"Nah man, I want that nigga. I wanna beat his ass and torture him so he can go through the same pain my little sister went through." He replied. "Shit, and I don't care if I get locked up. I'd do anything for Uriah. I was always there to protect her since we were little and my father was ghost. I was the man of the house and I just...I feel like I let her down."
Don could hear the emotion in Jaden's voice and he could feel his pain. He remembered feeling the same way when his father would beat his mother. To him, it was just a very stressful situation that hit close to home. He may not have known Uriah for that long, but he cared about her and wanted to make sure that her abuser got what he deserved.
"Don't beat yourself up man, you didn't know."
There was a short moment of silence.
"How didn't I see the signs..." Jaden mumbled out.
Neither of them had the answer so his words were left to linger in the universe...
After a few minutes they decided it was time to go. They picked up their duffle bags and headed over to the parking lot.
"You must think you the shit now that you finally got a damn car," Jaden spoke jokingly earning a smile and chuckle from Don.
"I ain't even gonna lie, I kinda do. Got tired of people carting my ass everywhere. Feels good to have my own shit, you know?"
"I sure do, but I'll hit you up later man. I'm about to go slide through this chick's crib."
Don laughed. "You really ain't shit nigga. Still cheating on your girl, but expect a nigga to treat your sister right."
"That's different."
"How? Monica got a brother, right? Or did you forget. You better chill before you get your ass beat next." Don spoke trying to put some sense into him.
"Nigga shut up. I'm out."
Donovan just shrugged. They gave each other dap and parted ways.
As Donnell drove down the road, he decided that he wanted to make a visit to Uriah to see how she was holding up. Her bruises and scars were healing and she had told him that she wasn't as sore as she had been. After taking medicine and resting like the doctor prescribed her at the hospital, she was having a pretty smooth recovery.
It was about three-thirty when he pulled into the driveway. He put his car in park, then proceeded to step out. He walked up to the front door and rung the bell. Uriah came and opened it up not long after.
"Hey," she smiled lightly. She moved aside for Don to walked in, then closed the door behind him so the cool air wouldn't get let out.
"Damn it feels good in here," he breathed out as the cool air from the central air engulfed him.
She chuckled. "Yeah it's hot as hell outside."
Don sat down on the couch as Uriah made here way in the kitchen.
"You good? You want some water or something?" She called from the kitchen.
"Uh," he pondered, "Yeah I'll have some water, please."
Uriah walked back into the living room and sat down next to him on the black couch after handing him his bottle of water.
"Thanks. Where your mom at? I saw her car outside." Donnell looked over at Uriah and saw her getting more comfortable on the couch. Today he noticed her hair was different. Instead of it being straight, it was in her cute little natural curls. She didn't have on any make up (as per usual) and was just lounging around in some shorts and a tank top.
"She had a long night at the hospital so she's upstairs in her bed sleeping."
"True," he nodded. "How are you holding up?"
Uriah shrugged and looked down. She licked her lips. "I don't know...I've been pretty sad, depressed, angry and just everything else. My mom keeps telling me to go to the police, but I don't want to. I want to get back at him. You never answered me when I asked if you knew where I could get a gun. I want to handle his ass, and I mean it."
He just stared at her and then sighed looking away. "Why don't you just let me and your brother handle the situation? We got you."
She rolled her eyes. "No. This is my battle. I mean, y'all can help but I want to be involved," she said.
Don could barely believe this was the same helpless girl he had met before, but everyone has their breaking point.
"But besides that, I honestly can't believe that I was actually pregnant and he took that away from me."
She began to get teary eyed and tried to wipe her eyes before they fell which didn't really work.
"I'm sorry," she sniffled. "Seems like all I do is cry now." Her voice cracked as she spoke her words.
"Shh. It's okay to cry," he whispered in comfort, wrapping his arms securely around her and she let him. Over the past couple of weeks they began to get closer and Uriah greatly confided in him. He had been her shoulder to cry to and she released her feelings to him. He was just so easy to talk to and she trusted him. But why wouldn't she? He saved her and she appreciated him a lot.
"I just--I don't understand what I ever did wrong!" She sobbed. "I was the perfect girlfriend. I was faithful and I loved him! I gave him all of me and he still didn't love me."
"You didn't do anything wrong. It was all him. He's a piece of shit. You're a beautiful amazing woman and you never deserved anything he's ever done to you."
She continued to cry. "You know, sometimes h-he would force me to--" she couldn't even finish her sentenced as she erupted in an even more violent sob. Her body shook and her face had a red hue to it.
Donnell clenched his jaw in anger because he knew exactly what she was going to say. His heart ached for her. He'd never truly understand how she was feeling inside, but he could feel her pain some how. Naturally, he gave her the utmost amount of empathy. "Shh. It's okay, baby girl." He rocked them from side to side as she began to calm down.
She looked up at him then spoke. "Thank you Donovan. Thank you so much for being here for me."
Uriah gazed into Don's eyes and moved in towards him until their lips fell against the other's. Uriah was hurting inside and she needed to feel some sort of comfort and security. She was yearning for the care and intimacy she never received from Kendrick. She was yearning for the love her father never gave her. She was lost. She was empty.
