Lacy
I slowly lowered myself out of the large, white moving van. Taking a few unsteady steps away from the dwarfing van, I found myself frozen on the drive way. My eyes froze along with the rest of my body as they graced themselves with the sight of the house. The brick walls were a cool brown colour and there were three windows situated on the front of the house. I took the time to fully absorb my surroundings.
There was a line of bushes with red berries on, that lined the front of the house, two tall trees stood by the side of the house. There was a section of the driveway that was covered in neat, cut grass. While the other side was a clean gravelled path, large enough for a car to drive down, leading up to the garage doors. Separating the two sides lay a tidy line of slabs that direct you towards the white front door.
My eyes trailed from the building in front of me to the building next to mine. It looked like a mansion. The prodigious building towered over my house, making it look ten times smaller. The house was pushed slightly further back than mine though you couldn't tell because there was no gap; the house was that large. Two black, metal gates stood stiff at the front of the entirely gravel drive way with two, tall, strong men standing on either side of them. The mansion looked to have around four floors, it was twice the length of mine and had around ten windows just on the front.
I steadily shut my jaw closed after gaping at the crème mansion for what seemed like hours.
Continuing on my path down the slabs, I arrived in front of the door.
Hesitantly I slid the cold metal key into the lock. As I was about to turn the key, I flinched back when I heard a loud bang resound around me. My head spins around to fast for my body and I feel a painful crack. Letting out a quiet whimper of pain: I leisurely ran my soft palms along the back of my neck in an attempt to sooth the pain that was coursing through it.
I watched on as the door continued to flap from the force it had just hit the side of the van.
Slowly, I turned back around and turned my attention back to the keys. I slowly turned the keys in the lock, hearing the quiet click as the metal recoils back into the wood of the door. I quickly retracted the keys from the door, blocking out every sound but the jingling they made.
Pressing my weight into the door, it pushed open, but not without a bit of extra force. For a second I felt weightless as I stand in the hallway, carelessly dropping my bag.
It all just felt surreal.
I always wanted to live alone, be away from my family and just be me.
Yet never did I want it to be under these circumstances.
A throat being cleared snaped me from my thoughts, allowing me to drag myself from my own world.
My eyes snapped up to the source, finding it only to be a moving man.
I gave him a small smile before walking out the hall and into a room that would make an excellent living room. The walls were a slate colour, and the floor was a dark wood. There was a bay window at the front of the room with thick, dark wood, window sills. Off to the side, there wss a Victorian fireplace with a basket of wood beside it.
I continued my journey further into the house where I found myself in the kitchen. The sides were a black granite that was shining in the morning sunlight. The walls were a light crème colour and the cupboards are a light wood with metal U-shaped handles.
Sighing as I looked out the window to the small, grassy garden I had outside I think to myself.
How am I meant to build a life here? In a new country? I only know two people, how am I meant to just start over and forget what I saw in Britain?
