Chapter 9:

She lost track of time, it felt like they were trapped for hours. The room was heating up quickly, she was starving and would flinch every time a walker would bang on the window or crash into the door.

The room was filled with high-tech security cameras and computers. They didn't work obviously, no electricity ran throughout the building. The guard sat on the plush black computer chair, his bones were visible, poking out from beneath his pale bloody skin. It looked like many walkers took a bite out of him, the poor guy.

Every time Rebecca's eyes wandered over to the guards rotted flesh a shiver ran down her spine. It was not going to rise, she was positive, but his bloodshot eyes stared right back at Rebecca, flashing pain.

She looked away almost instantly.

Carl was carving his name into the wooden floorboards with his knife. He didn't know when he and Rebecca were going to escape or how. There was no possible way to kill all those walkers hovering around the door and windows.

Once again this girl had led him into trouble. Yes he was mad, but what was fighting with her going to do? It wasn't going to get them magically saved, just create more friction between the two.

The tension between the two was awkward. Rebecca would bite her lip, madly blushing each time her stomach rumbled loudly. It had been a while since she last ate something, this morning she was too busy running around everywhere to remember to take care of herself and her body.

Her eyes wandered over to Carl, he payed her no attention as he dragged the knife down into the ground. "Do you think the group is looking for us?" She found herself asking aloud.

"Yes." Carl answered, not daring himself to look up at her.

After a few minutes of silent, she spoke again. "Well, we should at least try to find a way to get out of here. I feel useless." Rebecca stated, pulling herself up to her feet.

Carl blew away the remaining wood cravings on the knifes blade. "You are useless."

She rolled her eyes, ignoring Carls rude response. There had to be a way to get out of here, who knew how long it would take for someone to come kill off all those walkers and rescue them. Cautiously Rebecca made her way over to the desk, approaching it slowly.

No doubt the dead security guard freaked her out. When she neared closer to the corpse she began to smell a horrid odour coming from a mixture of blood and rotted human skin covering the zombie-like man. The smell was disgusting, it almost had her gagging.

Using her right hand thumb and pointer finger, Rebecca reached up and grabbed ahold of her nose, pinching it closed so she was able to block out the smell and continue on.

With her toes, Rebecca pushed away the office chair a few centimetres, watching it roll back taking the security guard resting on it along with it until it came to a stop not too far away.

Rebecca unplugged her nose and breathed in the sweet oxygen. 'Now with that disgusting corpse out of the way, there must be something useful upon this desk', she thought with high hopes.

Her eyes wandered the wooden desk top. All that remained on the surface were a bunch of pens, pieces of paper and a lone USB laid down beside a busted hard drive. Honestly, Rebecca knew nothing of what would come in the future so when she got ahold of the USB and stuffed it in the tight pocket of her jeans, she was curious to know of what was on it, if somehow the world happened to go back to its normal self.

Carl stayed seated two metres or so away from Rebecca. He made no attempt to get up, but from where he was sitting, he would occasionally look up at her and concentrate on watching her movements.
