Chapter 18:
Around her slim waist, Daryl supported half of Rebecca's body weight against him, the other half she held up on her own. Her eyes kept a worried glance every so often on Rick, afraid he would change his mind and shoot her in front of everyone. If he was sick of her, all he had to do was tell her and she'd simply avoid him and keep her lips remained locked. But no, he had threatened her, making it clear he passionately hated her but for what reason, only he knew.
"How's your ankle?" Daryl asked, for what felt like the 100th time, although it had only been the fourth.
Rebecca replied the exact same way she had to the other four times he asked, "It's not bad."
Daryl didn't seem to believe her. He would catch a glimpse of her wincing now and then or pursing her lips when a strong jolt of pain erupted due to putting too much pressure on it.
"Just, hang in there alright? We're nearly there." He encouraged. A part of him felt sorry towards Rebecca, after hearing this morning about how cold Rick has been Daryl felt like he should give her the comfort and kindness she deserved.
Carl gripped tighter onto Rebecca's hand. He was matching his walking pace with hers and keeping a look out for her, constantly asking if she wanted any water or to sit down and rest for a little while.
As they walked slow, Carl kept rubbing soothing circles with his thumb on the soft skin of Rebecca's hand. It was soothing and subsided Rebecca's attention a little off of the pain in her ankle.
During the trip back to the Museum, Rebecca told Daryl, Carl, Cody and Carol all about what happened to Beth and the identity of the car. They took the news quite calmly but Carol did confess that it would be difficult telling Maggie that her sister and last relative had been captured.
Rebecca was slightly worried over the fact that maybe Maggie would blame her for Beth's disappearance just like Rick did. She only hoped she didn't and that even after she spilled all her guts, Maggie would still want to remain being friends.
The entrance of the Museum was coming up. Rick had used his walkie talkie he kept hidden in his back pocket, and called for the others to go back to the Museum since the search was over. He never mentioned anything about who he found or where, he just gave them a order to return back to camp and ended it expecting them all to follow through with it.
Tyreese was standing at the gate. He pulled it open from the inside and gave Rick a nod. 'It must be some sort of guy greeting', Rebecca wondered.
Disappointment and a hint of amusement swirled deep in the pupils of his chocolate brown eyes. When Rebecca came up to him this morning, begging to be let out, Tyreese figured she would find another way out, but he didn't want it to be on his watch. She was a smart girl, he could see that, it wasn't surprising when he found out she escaped.
Rebecca didn't meet his eyes as Daryl and Carl helped support her through the gate and inside the museum. Carl ran and grabbed a crate packed away in a tight storage room, and placed it down beside Rebecca so she could take a seat without walking or reaching too far.
She planted her butt down and winced as she brought her ankle up onto a crate in front of her, Carl had brought as well.
"The others haven't returned yet. We need Maggie to have a look at your ankle, she's the closest we have to a doctor since she learnt off her dad--being a veterinarian and all." Carl explained in a crouch position in front of Rebecca.
