Once they got to their building, Jennie looked across the elevator at Lisa, and noticing a tear tricking down her cheek, Lisa couldn't stop herself from wiping it away with her thumb. "No more tears," Lisa told her. "Just know that I love you, and that if you want me, I'm all yours."
And when they reached their floor they each went into their apartments and closed and locked the door behind them. Lisa kicked her shoes off and sending them sailing right across the room, she was just so angry that it had to be like this. Of all the women in the world, she had to wind up with the one that she could probably never have.
In her apartment across the hall, Jennie was beside herself with grief, and went right to bed and cried herself to sleep. What had started out to be such an amazingly perfect day had turned into the worst night that either of them could ever have imagined.
But then Lisa got a call in the morning from her mother, and it only got worse. "Hi, Mom, how you doing?" she asked, trying to sound as normal as she could.
"Oh, I'm fine, dear. I just thought I'd let you know that Jennie is getting engaged. Apparently this Sunday after church services, Kai is planning to surprise her with an engagement party in the basement of the church. And seeing as we're almost family now her father and I were really hoping you could come and wish them well and enjoy the party."
Lisa sank down on her couch and dropped her head into her hand. She couldn't believe her ears. It was really going to happen. Jennie was going to marry that old fart, and walk right out of her life. Her heart clenched so hard in her chest, that she could actually feel the pain of it squeezing like a vice. "Uh... I really don't think I can make it, Mom. But thanks for asking."
She'd rather eat glass than show up for that. As if she could stand there and politely smile and make small talk while that old geezer slipped a ring on her finger and snatched her away from her.
"Oh, well, that's too bad. We were hoping you could come, but if you have other plans, I guess it can't be helped. You'll be missed, though."
Yeah, she had plans. She was going to get wasted like she'd never been wasted before. And then she was going to get up and do it all again the next day until she finally got her out of her system, providing she ever could. Fuck, she wished she'd have choked Kai when she had the chance that night at the restaurant.
Just her luck, she was walking out of her apartment as Jennie was leaving hers. Their eyes met and she could tell she'd been crying. "Hi," Jennie murmured.
"Hey. I just got a call from my mom, and I guess I should congratulate you now, since I won't be there on Sunday."
Jennie looked confused. "Congratulate me for what? What are talking about?"
"Not to spoil the surprise, but Kai's planning an engagement party in the basement of the church after services are over on Sunday. So, it looks like you'll finally be his, and you two will be getting married."
As what Lisa told her began to sink in, Lisa watched Jennie's lip begin to tremble and when she broke into a sob, Lisa cursed under her breath and pulled her into arms. Even if she couldn't have Jennie, she just couldn't stand to see her cry. And Jennie hung onto Lisa so tight, it felt like she never wanted to let go. "But I don't want to marry him," she brokenly whispered into her ear. "I love you, Lisa but I can't have you. And we both know why. But I know you're the only person I'll ever really love, no matter what happens."
Lisa pulled back just far enough to see her face and told her, "Then let's go to Vegas. And we'll worry about what happens when we get back. If you really don't want to marry him, you've only got until Sunday to take off with me. And if the engagement is meant to be a surprise, you won't have to turn him down in front of everyone, especially if we're already married."
