The next few weeks were amazing. Lisa had never been happier. With the life she had, it wasn't hard to say that, but with Jennie things were perfect. Christmas break came and they spent every single day together, mostly in bed. They spent Christmas together with their friends, exchanging a few gifts and a nice dinner. It was the best Christmas Lisa had ever had.
The more time Lisa spent with Jennie, the more she got to know her; the more she realized how unbelievably kind, beautiful and enchanting Jennie was. She was so fun and silly, she was always making her laugh. She was generous and caring, always wanting to make sure Lisa was happy and satisfied. And Lisa was the same for her. She had never had this before, the chance to treat someone like this, and no one had certainly ever treated her this way. No one had ever put her first, her wants and needs first, or cared what she thought about anything. Jennie made her feel like she was worth something, like she mattered.
Lisa's feelings for Jennie was strong to begin with, even when she didn't know Jennie that well, but now that she knew her intimately, knew her deeply, she couldn't get enough. Lisa couldn't get her out of her head. She couldn't stand being away from Jennie. But when they weren't together she couldn't help but worry. Her insecurities got to her when they were apart and bad thoughts clouded her mind. Did she feel the same way? They hadn't said 'I love you' yet. Was it too soon to say that? Lisa certainly felt it. Why hadn't Jennie said it? Was she with someone when they weren't together? Did she know she could do better?
Lisa had come to realize even though she wanted Jennie more than anything, that she didn't truly deserve her. Jennie was far beyond her league. A girl like her deserved the best, deserved money and trips, and diamonds, and flowers and everything she could ever possibly want. Lisa knew she couldn't give her most of those things. She knew that her criminal record might possibly become a problem one day, but she tried not to think about that. She just hoped that if the day ever came, Jennie would love her enough not to care about her past.
Lisa had been working a lot to get enough money to get her own place, finally. It was a small studio apartment in the crummy part of town, but it was only 400 a month and included heat, so she couldn't complain. She didn't spend a lot of time there anyways. Most days she was at work, most nights, at Jennie's. It had been a long week, the weather was cold; it was mid January now. Lisa couldn't wait to get off work, take a long hot shower and see Jennie afterwards.
Lisa had found Jennie a teacher pin and was excited to give it to her. She knew that was Jennie's quirky collection; strange and gaudy pins. She joked that every teacher needed pins. It made her feel like a real teacher in some silly way. Lisa hoped she would like this one. It was a stick figure teacher; with an apple on her head with her hair a crazy mess and papers in one hand and a pen in the other.
It wasn't expensive and she hoped that was alright. But as time went on throughout the day, she became more self conscious about it. What if she didn't like it? What if she saw the box and hoped it was something nicer? What if she's disappointed? Her questions turned to doubt, and the doubt to fear. By the time she was on her way to her apartment, she was sure Jennie was no longer interested in her. It was crazy how her mind spiraled into madness, but she couldn't help it. Lisa contemplated giving her the pin over and over, but finally grabbed it when she got out of her truck.
Lisa entered Jennie's apartment to find her on the couch, reading a book. As she shut the door behind her, Jennie got up off the couch and over to her for a hug. Jennie snaked her arms under Lisa's and around her waist. Jennie set her chin on Lisa's chest and looked up at her, smiling wide.
"Hi," Jennie sighed, looking up at her adoringly. All doubt went out the window when Jennie looked at her like that. Lisa placed both hands on the sides of her face and kissed her softly.
