You and Matthew had always been good friends. You grew up together in Arizona, and you decided to go to a university in Calgary once you both graduated. Lucky for you, that's where he was drafted.
For the few years he's been in the league, you two had been the best of friends, just like when you were kids. You partied together, hung out, cuddled, watched movies, everything two best friends do, right?
Matthew admitted his feelings for you around six months ago. You two cut off communication for a while until you sat down and talked about the situation. He said he would try to put his feelings aside for your friendship, and you believed him.

You stood in Matthews house, leaning your body on the kitchen island while music blared and everyone got drunk and wild. You had been talking to Johnny Gaudreau, one of your good friends since Matthew introduced you to the team.
Matthew came up and quickly joined into the conversation. Johnny left shortly after to go find some blonde he thought was cute.
"Quite a party, huh?" Matt almost yelled into your ear, over the music.
"Sure is, Tkachuk," you hollered back.
"You know, I'm really happy you came," he said, wrapping his arm around your waist.
"Me too, Matt. How much have you been drinking?" you said, hugging him back with your cup in hand.
He smirked down at you. "Enough to know that I still really like you, Y/N, even though I told you we would just be friends."
Your breathing hitched when he said that. "I-I gotta go to the bathroom, I'll be back." You placed your cup on the counter and you watched Matthew place his hands over his face and curse at himself as you snaked through the crowd to the bathroom upstairs, of course.
Once you locked yourself in the bedroom, you called your sister, Emma. She answered right away.
"Y/N? It's 2 AM, what do you want?" Oops.
"Oh shit, sorry, didn't know the time, but it's an emergency."
"Emergency? Are you okay?"
You sighed. "It's Matt."
She sighed too. "Oh, fuck. What now?"
"He threw a party, and we were talking, he told me he was happy I came and hugged my waist so I hugged him back and said me too."
"Okay, that's normal! Why did you call again?"
"I asked him how much he had drank. He told me that it was enough to know he still likes me. I ran, Em."
"Y/N! Are you fucking stupid? Everyone knows you like him except you."
"Actually, Emma, I realize I do like him," you sighed. "He's been the best friend ever and I get butterflies whenever I'm with him."
"Thank you! My work here is done. Bye, I love you," Emma said. And she hung up.
You got off the bed and went back downstairs to find Matt and tell him how you felt.
After minutes of searching, you finally found him at the beer pong table. His back was facing you.
You tapped him and said what you needed to say for years. Saying it scared you, so you closed your eyes. "Hey, I like you too. I always have, and I've been too-" You opened your eyes. He had some random girl in his arms. "Oh, um sorry, wrong person, my bad," you said, tears blurring your vision.
You could see how Matt's heart broke right there and then. You turned around and ran out of his house, forcing yourself down the stairs of the condo complex and straight to the garage where your car was parked.
You opened your purse and rummaged through it until you found your keys, unlocking your car and getting in as quickly as you could.
You closed the door and locked it. "Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck!" You slammed your head against the steering wheel, making the horn blare unintentionally. When you realized what you did, you picked your head up immediately and sank into your hands. "Damnit, Y/N."
Your vision blurred completely and your tears where spilling out of your eyes like buckets. A knock on your window startled you.
"Fuck!"
The windows on your black BMW were tinted, so you couldn't quite see who is was. You rolled your window down enough to see his blonde curls.
"Brady, get the fuck out of here!"
"Y/N, please come back upstairs, Matthew is in pieces," he pleaded.
"You know, Brady, you're underaged. You shouldn't even be here. Let alone talking to me. I love you, but I need some alone time. And I'm going home."
"I'm not going upstairs unless your with me. Plus, you can't drive. You're in no condition to do so."
"Fine, Brady. Let's go," you said, getting out of the car and following him back up into Matthews condo.
"Can you take me upstairs? I don't wanna see him."
"Okay, Y/N/N."
Brady led you upstairs to one of the guest bedrooms, where you settled in right away, washing off your makeup and climbing into the bed. "Thanks, B. See ya," you said as he slowly backed away through the door, letting a little wave as he did so.
You tried to fall asleep, but it was useless. You decided to turn on the TV and watch some random cooking show that was on at 2 am.
Your door barged open, and you thought it was Brady. You didn't look away from the screen until you heard his voice.
"Oh shit, wrong room, my bad," Matthew said, absolutely blacked out. With the fucking blonde.
Your heart cracked, but you patched it back up. "Actually, you can use this room, I was just on my way out."
You could tell he didn't recognize you until you walked by him. When you made eye contact with him before running out of the room, you saw him drop off the blonde and chase after you.
You hid around people to escape him before going to your car. Once you were there, you unlocked your car and sulked for a second, until the passenger door opened. "Brady, you mother fuc-" It was Matthew.
"Get out of my fucking car, Tkachuk."
"Y/N, I'm fucking sorry, ok! You hurt me for so long and I realized we would never get anywhere. What did you want me to do?"
"Matt, I told you how I felt! You STILL neglected my feelings and almost slept with that girl."
Matthew stepped out of the car and came over to your side and opening the door to crouch next to you.
"But I didnt. Y/N, you have neglected my feelings for so long now. It breaks my heart everyday. How many guys have you slept with without thinking of me, huh?"
At this point, you were getting angry. "None, Matt!" you yelled. "I've slept with nobody. I progressively starting seeing how I really liked you and I cut all dudes off. I know now that I like you Matt, I really do."
He ran his hands through his tasseled curls and sighed. "Please," he pleaded. "Forgive me."
"I will," you sighed and he smiled, grabbing your wrist affectionately. You ripped your hand out of his touch. "When I feel like it. Close the damn door."
His heart broke, which you could see through his eyes. He slowly closed the door and sulked away. You locked the car and drove off as quick as you could.
