"Your Highness, please. We are trying all that we can to figure out where they are."
"You obviously aren't trying hard enough," Namjoon snarled, his fists so tight that his nails cut into his palms.
The detective closed his eyes and inhaled deeply through his nose. In all his years of working for the law, he had seen and dealt with many people like Namjoon before, but that didn't mean he hated it any less. The sadness they exhibited rubbed off easily. All the same, why couldn't they just let him do his job?
"Sir, we'll notify you if there are any developments in your brother's case. For now, please just let me focus on this. We will keep you posted."
Namjoon sighed, his fists uncurling, and his eyes falling down to his shoes. "Alright. I apologize for being impatient."
The detective smiled, but it was fake. "It's alright. It's totally normal to think like that."
Namjoon nodded, a weak smile straining his cheeks to stay on his face, and quickly pivoted on his heel to walk out of the police station. Outside, waiting for him in the same place where they had stood a few minutes ago were Taehyung and Jungkook. The pair was giggling about something that Namjoon hadn't heard, and he smiled at them as he slid the black face mask under his chin and back over his mouth.
Jungkook turned around at the sound of his hyung's footsteps and grinned behind his own mask. "Ready to go hyung?"
Namjoon nodded, the confirmation caused Taehyung to clap his hands together happily. "I can't wait! Movie night!!" squealed the boy, his rectangular grin coming out full force.
Namjoon laughed flatly, gesturing them back to the car they had come in. He followed them in, the driver starting the engine the second their doors slammed shut. Jungkook and Taehyung asked for the driver to turn on the radio, and they began to sing along with whatever played, botching half the lyrics.
Namjoon stared out the window, his hand messing with a simple silver bracelet on his wrist. He had been feeling better ever since his grandmother's funeral a couple weeks ago. Well, better wasn't quite the word to explain it, but it was close enough. Beforehand, he either felt like the pain of loosing two of the closest people in his life to him would consume him, or he felt nothing at all. There was no halfway or in between. Now, he just felt . . . numb. One foot in his mind, aware of what he was seeing and doing, the other one in a dream-like state where he felt nothing and did even less.
The new year had arrived without anyone noticing, like one leaf fallen from a tree onto the forest floor where it was swallowed up by a thousand other leaves. Not a day went by when Namjoon didn't think about his brother, where he was, or if he was even still alive.
Jungkook and Taehyung were trying their best to stay happy—hence why they hadn't gone in with Namjoon to the police and were doing this movie night—but Namjoon couldn't ignore what was going on, as much as he would have loved to. His emotions had been poured out so much that he couldn't feel anymore, but it was okay. He preferred feeling nothing than everything all at once.
Namjoon closed his eyes and listened to Jungkook's beautiful voice as it mixed with Taehyung's deep one. He didn't focus on what they were singing, he just focused on how it sounded. And even though they weren't trying, it was still amazing knowing that they were happy, even if it was for a moment.
