Goldie's POV

No one was one hundred percent after that rumble. That is, not for about a month later. Pony was in real bad shape for most of it. He got his ass kicked even though he begged to be in it. He was hallucinating and everything, but he eventually pulled through. Even Mom has been feeling better since it's been a few months after the fire. Her black eye healed up nicely too.

Dad apparently got concussed real bad. He was out of commission for a few days but now he's just fine, right back to his typical happy-go-lucky self. Darry said that if he started to puke then he would have dragged him to the hospital, but luckily he didn't. Once Dad felt a little better, he threw himself into caring for Ponyboy. It reminds me of when I was a kid, Dad was always the one staying home with us when we were sick. Making chicken noodle soup, checking our temperature, holding us when we cried, and rubbing our backs when we puked. He is really sweet. He actually feels fulfilled taking care of the people he loves.

The court date was scheduled as soon as Uncle Pony was healthy again. We were all a shaky mess for court, but only good news came out of it. Johnny didn't get arrested, and Uncle Pony and Dad did not get sent to a boys' home. Dad, Mom, Pony, Darry, and everyone else was gussied up nice for it. They wore their Sunday best, and did their hair neatly everyday. Dad was so happy when we heard what the judge said. Hell, all of us were. I threw a reassuring arm around Pony's shoulders, doing my best to be the loud, positive energy in the room, even if my stomach was tied in knots the entire time.

This case had broken out throughout all of Oklahoma. People are really cracking down on Socs now and how bad they treat Greasers. It's causing a lot of Greasers to not be afraid to stand up for themselves anymore.

In the beginning, the amount of beatings the Socs were giving out had reached an all-time high. Once the Greasers started fighting back, Socs have been too afraid to start a fight because they know that they wouldn't be able to finish it. Even the amount of rumbles has gone down drastically, and if there is one, it's usually just for fun.

In school, I'll see everyone stop and stare at Mom as she walks by. She became one of the most popular girls in school, and definitely not by choice. She and the guys were the talk of the town when Bob was found dead and they had ran away. Rumors spread like wildfire with theories and guesses as to what had happened that night and where they went. Then after the fire and they were hailed to be heroes, no one would shut up about them.

Dad was apparently a very popular guy in school. From my understanding, he was well-loved, funny, and quite the charmer. Even after he dropped out, girls would still talk about him in the halls and gush. When word got around that Sandy and Soda had officially broken up, so many rumors started circulating around him and Mom. That they were secretly dating, that she talked Dad into breaking up with Sandy, and how they must be sleeping together since they live together. Ew. I don't know how many of these rumors made it back to either of them because I certainly wasn't going to tell them, but it was a big deal around the hall. They were basically teen-royalty of Will Rogers High.
