Goldie's POV

There was a lot of talk about a big fight that was going to break out between the Socs and the Greasers. It's called a rumble. That took me a while to figure out. I figured it would be duck soup, considering how many of us there are. But I was told that they are intense and hard to take the egg. Originally, Darry forbid Johnny and Pony to fight. After lots of begging on their part, Darry finally let them go.

I accidentally mentioned that I've never been in a big group fight before, and nearly everyone was completely shocked.

"You ain't never been in a rumble?" Steve asked while he sat on the couch, next to Mom who was sitting on the arm of the couch by the front door. She was talking to Dad who had just opened the front door, he was trying to talk her into coming to watch the rumble until I spoke up.

I shook my head. "Not unless you count that one a few months ago. But we don't have these where I'm from."

"That's not true, you were in one in April too. This should be your first one," Steve pointed out.

"That one don't count, he didn't even throw a punch." Dally rolled his eyes.

I pressed my lips together into a straight line and nodded. "Thanks, Dal."

"Can we take him?" Two looked up at Darry from the chair he was in.

Darry looked over at Two like the goop he is. "He's not a dog. Don't ask me."

"Wanna come?" Two directed his question to me. "It's awfully fun."

"You got the awful part right," Mom mumbled as she readjusted the DX hat on her head.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Two asked, like she personally offended him.

"I'm just saying that it doesn't resolve anything, I don't like standing by watching you guys get your asses kicked." She turned her head to me and said, "do what you want. I don't care, I'm not your mom."

I clenched my jaw and took a shaky breath. I had to remind myself that comments like those were just coincidences. She doesn't know.

"Sure, I'll go," I said.

"Great, we can use every man we can. Strength in numbers," Darry said while he rolled his short sleeves of his shirt up. He looked at Pony and said, "I still don't know about you."

"Look, if it was with knives or chains, it would be different. I'll be okay," Pony reassured.

Darry gave in. "All right, but you be careful. Okay?"

"I will," Pony promised.

"Can I come?" Candy asked.

"No," Darry immediately stated.

"How old are you?" Two asked.

"Fourteen," Candy responded.

"Yeah, not a good idea," Ponyboy said.

"Well, you're fourteen!" Candy retorted.
