Past Pains

Guy's dream:

"Chase? Chase!" I only see darkness, but I hear Kate's voice. Someone shakes me harshly and I groan. The pain from my side burns and I wish to rip the pain away. My eyes flutter open and I notice that now I'm alone.

"Kate?" I call out. "Sister?" "I can't just lay here on the floor being pathetic," I think to myself. I need to find someone. I need to find Kate. I flop over on my stomach and also make sure to avoid putting pressure on the wound. As I slowly pull myself out of Kate's room, my memory fades into another one.

"Mom?" My voice breaks into the dark room sounding younger. A stifled sob comes from the farthest corner in the room. My nerves are rigid with uncertainty, but I shuffle into the room anyway. "Mom, is that you?" My hand reaches out to touch the closed off figure before me. Then, the memory slips away into another one.

I cough and pull roughly at my suit. The church is hot and many people are packed in like sardines. Couldn't they turn on a few air conditioners? My mood turns somber quickly as the preacher begins the service. That memory disappears and I'm left alone in the darkness.

...

Guy's pov:

My eyes jump open, my heart still races, and my body has broken into a sheen sweat. A nightmare? No. This had to be some kind of memory. I could feel the familiarity racking inside my skull. I furiously wipe the sweat away from my forehead. Am I only going to learn my memories in broken pieces? Didn't people with amnesia immediately receive their memories after a while? I shrugged the thoughts and frustration away. I am not in the mood for this.

'My mood turns somber quickly as the preacher begins the service.'

Why would I become somber at a church service! This did not make any sense at all. I huff in frustration and gaze at the hurriedly brightening sky. I glance at the slumbering Hoogie. I want to get away. I need some fresh air, but I can't leave Hoogie like this. A thought formulates and then a plan takes action.

I grab a nearby stick and scrawl the word Beach. I drop the stick and shoot out from under the cover of the uprooted tree. I ran against the lovely and refreshing breeze. My feet hit the sand as I reach the welcoming beach. Slowing down, I venture into the shore. The water sways past me and then races back. My nerves soon calm down and I stare out into the horizon.

What is that? I blink. I peer into the vast ocean. I blink harder this time. Is that an island? Sure enough with the sun continuously rising, my sight clearly defines another island very far away. My thoughts fluster around me.

A rustle behind me snaps me back into reality. I turn around to a lumbering Hoogie. He yawns as he crosses over the sand to stand by me in the water. "What are you doing, Guy?"

"Do you see that?" I point at the far away island.

Hoogie glares at it for a while and mutters, "I wish I didn't." I stand there in silence. The wind whips around me and the sea spreads it's salty spray. I'm waiting... I'm waiting for Hoogie to explain.

After many minutes of waiting, I finally break the silence. "What are you not telling me?" Hoogie rips his gaze away from the island and a sense of dread envelopes him.
