I Don't Want It

Hackett's pov:

"Amanda!" I laugh and chase after her.

"No!" She howls as I reach out for her. She slips out of my grasp and I huff. I slow down and my feet come to a stop.

She is fast. I bend over trying to catch my breath and Amanda comes running back, laughing.

"You will never catch me!" Her smile reaches her silver eyes.

"Don't get too confident about that." I give her a devilish grin and she giggles back.

The atmosphere changes and her mood turns sour. "I thought you changed, Hackett. Don't you remember? You need to remember!" She cries out.

I wake up covered in sweat and clutching my heart. I stare at the scars that surround my arm. I ease back and my eyes drift to the ceiling. This morning I am alone and I thank my lucky stars for that.

A memory, that often comes to mind, makes me relive a day of my past.

"Hackett! What you are doing here is wrong!" The fire reflects in Hoogie's eyes. He seems twice as fierce with the blaze dancing behind me and the warm glow of hate shadowing his face. Feeling that I was falling into a trap, I push him back.

"What are you going to do about it? You have been following my orders ever since that damn boat sank! Why are you now questioning me?" I spat at him.

"Hackett, please, listen to me! This is not you. You changed..." I threw a punch at him. He tumbles back and holds a hand to his cheek. Surprise pools into his eyes, and later hurt.

"I changed?" I thundered. "I have done nothing of the sort! You are the one who has changed Hoogie! Ever since that old man Davenport drowned, you became a no good mope! There is nothing important about him. He would not have helped us if he was still alive!" Something in Hoogie's face snapped and he sprang up and pushed me hard.

I fell back with my arms flailing around and my left hand landed into the fire pit. I howled and soon Hoogie was on top of me. "Don't you dare talk about Mr. Davenport like that! He was more of a friend than you ever will be to me." He punched me and I fainted from the blow.

He ruined my hand, but he will not ruin my day. I climb out of bed and shrug on my clothes. I march out and run into Aaron. She stumbles and falls while I regain my balance. I grab her hands and pull her up. "Sorry." I mutter.

She looks up at me with a raised eyebrow.

I grimace, "What is it?"

"Nothing." She regains her composure and deadpans, "Lilith is still missing."

"Two groups this time. You pick them out." I say quickly and try to past her.

"And where are you hurrying to?" She turns around with a smirk.

"I'm waking up our guess this morning." I shrug and return the knowing look she gives me. I swing back around and knock on the door next to mine. I wait for a few minutes and open the door. I then close it behind me and walk over to the bed. The young man before me stirs awake. His beautiful features fall into recognization.

"Hackett," he yawned.

"Good morning, Guy, I came to talk about your payment." Enjoying his rough morning voice, I grin down at him.

"Payment?" His lips part and the question is clear in his eyes.

I suddenly became embarrassed. I never felt like that before. I cough. "Yes, your payment. You see nothing on this island comes for free. You must work your rank."
