The day soon arrived and their journey continued. The wind was still cold and vicious, but if they didn't continue, they miss the chance to give the baby back to his herd, and they weren't going to risk it.
"Alright, lets get you cleaned up." Sid licked his claw and wiped it over the baby. "I mean, what's your daddy gonna say when he sees you all dirty like this?"
Hazel eyed Sid as he cleaned pinky up with slight amusement until Manny moved the sloths claw away with his trunk.
"You clean up nice, little fella." Manny sarcastically commented.
"You know I think he may start to look like me." Sid commented, not catching the sarcasm.
"Yeah." Hazel chuckled lowly. "The resemblance is just uncanny." She smirked. Sid just glanced at her as Manny chuckled under his breath before turning to the other saber.
"Hey Diego, what do you think?" Sid questioned, holding up the baby near him.
He just stared at him before looking off in the distance. "Maybe we shouldn't do this."
"Hmm?" Hazel raised a brow. "Why not?"
"Because if we save him, he'll grow up to be a hunter." He turned back to the group. "And who do you think he'll hunt?"
"Well, because we saved him, he won't hunt us." Sid suggested.
"Yeah, well maybe he'll grow fur a long skinny neck and call you mama!!" Diego retorted. Everyone just stared at him with confused expressions.
"What's your problem?" Manny questioned with a raised brow.
"Nothing!" Diego sighed lowly. "Let's go I'm, freezing my tail off." He continued on with the path.
The other three just glanced at each other. They were all confused as to why Diego was acting the way he did, but soon shrugged it off and continued on.
"Wow," Hazel began, still not used to the silence. "We're close to his herd."
"Yeah!" Sid agreed, bouncing the baby in his arms. "I'm sure he won't hunt us when he grows up now will you?" He cooed at him lightly.
"I sure he won't." Hazel chuckled, sighing loudly to herself. "And we'll have to go our ways when we're done."
"Huh?" Sid looked up at her. "Why?"
"We all have a herd to travel with right?"
"But we're a herd," Sid remarked, "and a herd sticks together."
"Sid's right you know." Manny sparked up. "We've been through a lot in the last few days."
Hazel stared up at the mammals who smiled at her before Manny turned to call out Diego who'd lingered back for some reason. They had been through a lot in the past few days, and she felt so close to them. If she were to leave them after the journey, she didn't have anywhere else to go.
"Do you have a herd?" Sid questioned finally, getting her to look up at him. "Why are you out on your own if you do?"
Hazel glanced at him, before looking up at Manny who eyed her suspiciously. She sighed heavily, and was about to explain;
"Get down!!" Diego called out as he ran in front of them.
"Huh-What?!" They all exclaimed as Diego shushed them.
"Get down and follow me!" He finished.
"Why, what's going on!?" Sid questioned.
"At the bottom of Half Peak..." Diego heaved heavily, before turning his head away in shame. "There's an ambush waiting for you."
"What?!" Sid And Hazel exclaimed together in shock.
"What do you mean an ambush?" Manny questioned, and they all soon understood what was going on.
"Why..." Hazel heaved out weakly, feeling betrayed. "Why did you lie to us?!"
"It was my job!!" Diego retorted. "I was supposed to get the baby, but then-"
"And then," Manny interrupted brutally. "-you brought us all home for dinner!!"
"That's it!" Sid yelled out angrily, pointing a claw at the male saber. "You're out of the herd!"
"I'm sorry." Diego apologised quickly.
"No you're not!" Manny pushed the saber up against the wall with his tusk, getting Sid and Hazel to huddle close together, backing up against the opposite wall. "not yet..."
"Listen!" Diego heaved out, "I can help you!"
"Stay close guys!" Manny ordered Sid and Hazel. "We'll fight through it!"
"No, the packs too strong!" Diego remarked. "You have to trust me!"
"Trust you like we did for the past few days?!" Hazel yelled at him with a shaky voice. "We all trusted you, but then you betrayed us!!"
"Shes right!" Manny exclaimed, spatting out every word with anger. "Why in the world should we trust you?!"
"...Because I'm your only chance." Diego replied after moments of silence.
Manny just glared at him suspiciously as Sid and Hazel glanced at each other nervously.
Everyone was sceptical of Diego, but if they were to take a wrong step or turn, they would get ambushed by his pack and now he wanted to protect them.
"I don't trust you," Hazel weakly sparked up, getting everyone to face her. "I don't know if I can anymore." She took a deep breath, trying to not breakdown. "But you're the only one who can help us out now, even though we're all stuck in it because of you."
Manny turned back to the male saber, narrowing his eyes before moving back, letting the saber hit the snowy ground below.
Hazel shakily walked up beside Manny to look down at the male saber. "Do you have a plan to get us out?"
Diego looked up at her, she looked deeply hurt like everyone else, and it was all thanks to him that they felt that way.
Heaving heavily, he slowly got up back on his feet. "I do have a plan..." He began, "but we only have one chance to get it right..."
The other mammals glanced at each other. At this point it was a life or death situation. But the baby needed to get back to his herd, and of trusting the saber who'd betrayed them is what'll take to get him back, they knew they have to risk it.
