Ice Age: Life On Thin Ice

Chapter 10

Hazel let in the sharpest breath she ever breathed. Their plan was in action.

Diego had gone off to see the other sabers, Sid was holding the "baby" in the bundle and she and Manny were not far off.

Her goal was to see when Sid came up to view and signal Manny so their can start they're part of the plan, or rather end the whole ordeal.

"Are you nervous?" She turned back to Manny who looked down at her.

"I'm sceptical." He answered after thinking it over. "But we're going to try."

Hazel shakily nodded, looking back out for Sid.

The anticipation was driving her crazy. She felt her heart pounding viciously, praying that the plan will work and they all escape peacefully.. She soon noticed Sid off the distance, getting her to ran over to the mammoth.

"He ran pass!" She told Manny and ran behind him.

Three sabers soon ran from behind the corner but stopped when they saw the mammoth holding a huge branch.

"Surpriiise!~" Manny swung the branch at them, knocking them all off the hill and land on the snowy ground below.

Hazel walked over beside Manny, looking down at the sabers below, letting out a huge sigh of relief.

"Great job!!" Diego praised loudly. "Lets pick up Sid and get out of here." They all began to turn away but;

"Come on Diego." Everyone froze and turned to the source of the voice. "Let's bring this mammoth down!"

Hazel felt paralysed with fear until she noticed him and Diego closing Manny into a wall, and she immediately jumped in front of him.

"You're not touching a fur on him." Hazel growled lowly, getting both sabers to stop in their tracks.

Soto glanced the female saber, narrowing his eyes. "Are you going to risk your life for him?" He questioned lowly.

Hazel heaved heavily, gulping silently as she stared Soto dead in the eye, nodding slowly.

"Okay." He replied, continuing to close in on them. Hazel stood her ground, getting ready to attack until Diego walked in between them.

"What are you doing?!" Soto roared out angrily.

"Leave, them alone." Diego growled lowly..

Soto raised a brow, turning to the sides to see his minions, Oscar and Lenny walking beside him.

"Fine." He began coldly. "I'll take you down first."

Diego and Soto began walking in circles, growling at each other until they pounced each other.

Manny and Hazel made a move to help but we're cornered by the other sabers who crowded in on them. Hazel let out a fierce growl before lashing out onto Oscar, nearly ripping into his flesh as he fought back.

She jumped from one saber to another, trying to prevent them from harming the mammoth who could only do so much in defense as Diego and Soto were fighting one another, ripping each other apart.

During the fight, she noticed Soto knocking Diego into a rock, seemingly knocking him out cold.

Rage got the best of her and she ran off, jumping onto Soto's back and barely clawed him before she was knocked off his back when he viciously turned around and slammed into a nearby rock.

She felt completely dazed from the hit and was weak from the battles with the other sabers. She tried getting up, to continue protecting her friends, but felt too much pain to run, let alone attack again.

She turned to Diego who lied motionlessly and her gazed followed Soto who smirked her before walking around the other sabers as they closed in on Manny who tried to fight back but only backed up into a wall.

She barely met his gaze as she tried to run before he turned to Diego in hopes of either one will help. He finally turned back at Soto, who showed no mercy as he stared him dead in the eyes.

Manny swung his trunk at Soto, missed and he jumped for the throat.

"MA-"

Hazel blinked and froze entirely when Diego suddenly jumped in, taking the fatal attack and fell to the ground on his side.

A small scream caught their attention, and they turned to see Sid with the baby, covering his(the baby's) mouth soon after.

She was growled as Soto smirked at them, and she tried to run but the pain was too much for her. Before either one could take a step, Manny slammed the saber with his trunk in full force and he hit a wall not far off, where icicles above him shook viciously.

Hazel just breathed heavily at the saber, turning away just as the icicles fell and slowly approached Diego who lied motionlessly on the ground. When she was close enough, she collapsed beside him, nudging him gently with her head as the others soon joined them.

"We were...some team huh?" Diego heaved weakly.

"Were? Come on, we're still a team." Manny encouraged.

"I'm sorry I set you up."

"Ah you know me." Sid walked closer. "I'm too lazy to hold a grudge." He placed pinky down beside Diego, who gurgled sadly and placed a hand on his face.

"Knock it off, squirt." Diego muttered weakly. "You gotta be strong. You have to take care of Manfred, Sid and Hazel. Especially Sid."

"Diego please." Hazel heaved weakly, trying to get up. ""You can fight through it."

"Yeah, you can lick this," Sid agreed; "You're a tiger, listen I'll carry you,"

"We'll all take turns!" Hazel pleaded, gently nudging Diego. "Please Diego?"

"Come on Diego, come on, tell him his gonna be okay Manny."

Hazel stared up at the mammoth, hoping he will but the expression on his face said otherwise as he stared down at him. She felt tears escaping her eyes as she stared back at Diego.

"Listen, you have to leave me here." Diego heaved weakly, "If those humans get through the pass, you'll never catch them."

"You didn't have to do that." Manny commented.

"...That's what you do in a herd." Diego muttered out lowly before resting into the snow in peace.

The baby gurgled sadly as Manny picked him up, and they all mourned over the saber, the same one who'd betrayed them, but ultimately ended up saving their lives, and they views him as a good guy.

They stood in silence for minutes before heading off. They all felt bad for leaving their friend behind, but they have to continue their journey to get the baby back, and it was what he wanted. The herd only want to grant him his final wish. They didn't have far until they return baby to its herd.
