Evan was prepared to lay on the ground for forever. 'Someone will come get me. Someone will find me.' He kept telling himself. Slowly, the reality that no one was ever going to find him sunk in. Any attempt in standing up was futile, only throwing him back into shock with the help of him newfound broken arm. So there he lay, alone. Sunlight blinding him, making him just close his eyes. His attempt on his life failed, and now he was stuck with the consequences. He was such a loser, and a failure. 'I had one job.' He thought. 'Why did I have to make the most simplest things impossible.' His ears became so accustomed to the silence of the forest, he almost jumped when the slight thumping of footsteps approach him.
"Hey, are you alright?" A voice said, seemingly coming from the angelic savior blocking the sun and giving Evan the chance to open his eyes.
"Y-yea I just f-fell out of that t-tree." Evan stuttered. "I t-think I b-broke my arm." The tall, long haired, beautiful (if you asked Evan) chuckled and looked over the smaller, dirty, broken boy.
"Let me help you?" He says as he stoops down and gingerly scoops up the boy bridal style. Evan held his arm close to his chest and whimpered a bit at the sudden adjustment. "You alright?" He asked as he began walking toward his car. Evan nodded. "Well, I'm Connor. Connor Murphy." He said as his dark brown eyes scanned the large, yellow spotted field with trees on the brim.
"I-I'm Evan Hansen." He replied meekly, though of course they knew each other's name.
"Cute name." Connor complemented, making Evan blush profusely. Connor approached his car and gently set Evan down on his feet so he could stand while Connor opened the door. Once he got Evan in the car, he let out a deep breath. Connor shook out his shaky hands. Of course Connor knew Evan, he's been in love with him since 8th grade, secretly of course. Connor ran around to the other side and got in the car.
As they drove down the road toward the hospital, Evan felt more and more light headed. He reached his hand up the back of his head and gently ran his fingers through the back of his head. A sticky, dark, liquid coated his fingers as he pulled away. Blood, he cracked his head open, and he was bleeding out; probably all over Connor's car seat.
"We're almost there. You gonna make it?" Connor looked at Evan's bobbing head as his eyes drooped as Evan could barely keep them open. Seeing Evan like this hurt Connor, because, even though he and Evan have barely talked before today, Connor had the biggest crush on Evan, and everything that he is. "Evan?" He asked again. Evan fully lost consciousness as his head fell completely forward, revealing his wound to Connor. "Holy shit! Evan." Connor panicked and floored the gas, picking up the pace significantly and speeding toward the hospital. The car screeched in to the emergency parking zone, mostly there for ambulances. A nurse walked out to the car to tell them they couldn't park there, but at the sight of Connor carrying the limp Evan yelled behind her for a doctor and rushed to Evan's aid. She led Connor to a bed in the emergency room so he could set Evan down. A balding, short man in a white doctor coat rushed in with some tools and four more nurses. Connor wanted more than anything to stay with Evan. To be there for him no matter what, but a lady ushered Connor out of the room and shut the door in his face. There he stood, outside the door, the (for lack of better term) love of his life, dying on the other side of the door. Connor doesn't care if Evan doesn't love him back, if Evan dies, Connor would forever regret not confessing his feelings when he had the chance.
Connor waited hours in the cold, bleach smelling waiting room. The plastic-fabric chair creepily becoming more and more uncomfortable but Connor didn't have enough room in his mind for thinking about whether or not he was comfortable. His eyes stared holes into the floor and didn't budge until he saw the shiny black shoes of a doctor approaching him. It was the same doctor from before. The doctors short statement, telling Connor that Evan was going to be ok and that he could see him, made Connor's heart almost leap out of his chest. Connor and the doctor walked through the bleached white walled hallways.
Evan sat upright in his bed. A dull pain radiated from the back of his head. A tall, long haired figure dressed in black appeared in his doorway. Evan smiled at the sight of Connor. They may have never talked, but Evan has always noticed him in the halls and thought he was so attractive and hugely misunderstood.
"How are you feeling?" Connor asked gingerly as he sat on the edge of the hospital bed. Evan's face began to warm up at the other boy's presence.
"F-fine. My head j-just hurt's a bit." Evan stuttered. Maybe he could get surgery for that.
"What happened to you? I was so worried." Evan looked down in disgust and embarrassed. Could he tell Connor? He seemed like the kind of person who wouldn't tell. He basically saved Evan's life, even though that wasn't Evan's intent."I-I was climbing a really tall tree and the branch I was standing on broke, s-so I feel." Evan looked at his new addition to his arm, turning it over he noticed how it graciously covered scars he'd been struggling to hide with makeup for years. Though he would never say it out loud, he wished he broke both arms. The makeup was getting expensive and his mom was getting suspicious.
"Are you sure? Because that's not what I saw." Connor looked at Evan with sad eyes, already knowing what happened.
Connor was out for a walk. His sister was giving him shit for being high all the time and he needed to get some air. He saw something up in the tree, well more like someone. He looked a different direction for a second when he heard a thump and a groan. After noticing the distinct blue shirt and small frame, Connor ran faster then he's ever ran in his life over to the base of the large oak he had his eyes on a moment before.
"W-what did you see?" Evan said in a scared tone. Connor couldn't stand to see Evan so scared and upset, only because he knew exactly what he was feeling.
"Everything." Connor said, not wanting to make Evan relive the moment, but he had to ask. "Did you fall, Evan? Or did you let go?" Evan kept his eyes on the cast, not daring to look up at the beautiful man sitting in front of him and especially not to reveal the ugly truth that hid behind his eyes. Connor reached his hand out and pulled Evan's chin up so their eyes would meet. Evan felt tears begin to form but he couldn't look away. Connor took this moment to shoot his shot, leaning forward abruptly and kissing Evan softly, hoping to not hurt him any further. Evan's eyes widened at the sudden contact but almost instantly melted into the taller boys embrace. Time seemed to stop when Connor realized Evan was kissing back, and it felt like fireworks. After what felt like forever, a nurse walked in and interrupted the boy's moment.
"Evan?" Connor pulled away as the nurse stood still in the doorway. Evan opened his eyes, but when he saw who the nurse was, he wished he didn't. "I saw your name on the surgery board and I freaked out. Are you alright? What happened?" The woman ran over to Evan's other side, grabbing his non-cast-hand. Evan flinched and looked at Connor for help.
"M-mom I'm fine. I-I just fell out of a t-tree and broke my arm." Evan explained, not the whole truth of course. He has been leading his mom to believe he's getting better and he won't break it to her now that he hasn't. Connor sat there awkwardly, watching the whole exchange, knowing the question was about to be asked.
"Who's this?" Mrs. Hansen asked as she thoroughly looked Connor up and down. Connor panicked and did the only thing that came to his head, hoping Evan wouldn't mind since he also kissed back.
"Hi, Mrs. Hansen. I'm Connor. Evan's boyfriend." He said holding out a hand to shake hers. She shook back but Connor kept his eyes on Evan, hoping he might give him the ok to introduce himself like that. Evan smiled and nodded at his new boyfriend. Definitely not the ideal way he wanted this to go but it works.
"Oh, I didn't know you had a boyfriend Evan? I didn't even know you liked boys." Mrs. Hansen said with a chuckle.
"Well I-I do now." Evan and Connor looked at each other, excited for this new chapter.
