A shockwave passed through the earth under their feet, causing Heaven to stumble a little. Nevaeh caught her before she could fall, and they both had a laugh. The twins were in their apartment in Vancouver, Canada, packing for the adventure of their lives. Heaven looked towards her sister with her brilliant purple eyes, only to see her missing. She did a quick scan of the room, before…
“Boo!” Nevaeh jumped from the side of the bed.
“Ahh! Don’t do that!” Said Heaven, slightly upset.
“Aww come on sis, know when to take a joke.” Nevaeh said in a sarcastic and slightly demeaning tone.
“Well your, ‘jokes’ usually end up with us in trouble.” Heaven said with a chuckle.
They both went to the bookcase, grabbing novels and reference books for different ancient languages and putting them securely between the shirts and jeans in their cases. After one final confirmation that they had everything, they headed to the door and plopped their bags near the entrance.
They still had a while until they had to go, so they sat on their old, creaky couch and watched documentaries together, every once in a while, Heaven slapping Nevaeh’s hand to keep her from picking at her short, pixie cut hair.
Lost in their show, they nearly smashed their heads against the low ceiling as the doorbell buzzed. Glancing through the peephole, a beautiful woman with bug-like eyes was standing at the door. They opened it to find the hefty, tuxedo-clad woman’s smile as she looked up from her tablet.
“Is this the residence of Heaven and Nevaeh Charpentier?” She asked warmly.
“This is!” Heaven responded. “And who might you be?” Nevaeh asked.
“You may call me Ma-” she started, then paused. It was as if she had forgotten her own name. “Ah, how about you just call me Kyota.” she finally responded.
“Well nice to meet you Kyota…” Nevaeh said cautiously. It may have been nerves, but that slip-up didn’t comfort her in the slightest.
Kyota offered to get the luggage, but the bags were already in the twins’ hands before she could finish her sentence. The tough looking, bald, African woman shivered as she led them to the car, -This made Heaven smirk- and together they rode the small car to the mansion. Vancouver was only a six-hour drive from the mansion, granted they didn’t run into border troubles.
Just after starting, they stopped at a fast food place and picked up some food. “There won’t be many restaurants on the drive there, and I don’t want to prolong this drive any later than it has to be. So order extra if you must. And no poutine please, I heard it is awfully messy. I don’t think I can risk getting filth in this car.”
Just as she pulled up, Kyota took off her jacket. As she did so, on the left of Kyota’s neck Neveah spotted what looked like a tattoo. Heaven nudged Neveah, and asked if she saw the “Scorpion on her shoulder blade.” with a little nod, Neveah confirmed both of their suspicions.
Acting as if nothing happened, the girls ordered four burgers together and 3 large fries (one for Kyota), with Kyota ordering 6 more burgers presumably for herself. The drive was long, but bearable since the twins brought music. Classic rock for Neveah and electric swing for Heaven.
“What kind of music do you listen to Kyota? As long as we have a signal, we can pull up any song you choose!” spouted Heaven excitedly.
“You wouldn’t like the songs I do. No one does,” she replied poker-faced.
“Aww come on! Try me.”
“They wouldn’t be on that thing anyway.” Kyota reasoned again.
“Well, tell us the genre, and maybe we can find something similar.”
Kyota sighed, seemingly having given up. She told them what to search, and now intrigued, the duo searched it up. Airy flutes and booming drums filled the car, almost as if the car itself was the group of players.
“It is an acquired taste,” Kyota said, turning the volume down.
“I’d been interested in ancient civilizations since I was small, and even used to pretend certain toys were tribes. I would watch them unmoving for hours, pretending there were wars and peace, life and death, all from the unmoving figurines.” Kyota explained, noticeably embarrassed.
“Well, I for one like it. It so haunting it gives you the shivers.” Heaven responded, a smile on her face.
The group sat in the car, listening to Kyota’s ancient, enchanting tunes and exchanging songs and burgers until they finally arrived.
Note- Sorry for the late update, I will be back on schedule next Wednesday.
