Daniel awoke with a start to quite the harsh alarm clock. Trust him when he says you don't want to awaken to an angry woman shouting for all the sleeping beauties to wake up at 4 in the morning. Also, trust him when he says he isn't a beauty while sleeping. He sluggishly stood up from bed, got dressed, put up his dreads, then headed down to have breakfast with the others.
Passing the large, orange looking window as he opened the larger door to the dining hall to find everyone already sitting down, enjoying some nice dishes. Daniel chose egg in a frame and observed the crazy variety of egg meals. Eggs were poached, sunny-side up, scrambled, boiled, in omelets and breakfast burritos, just about everything you could think of. Come to think of it, a lot of chicken too.
"What is with all the eggs?" Daniel asked Carlos, everyone else leaning in hoping to hear why.
"Mr. Hyle owns a sizable chicken farm, which is how he got this mansion in the first place. Naturally, the owner of the company gets free products." "We get a lot of eggs for breakfast and chicken for dinner..." Kyota interrupted in a slightly grieved tone. Kyota muttered something under her breath, Daniel struggling to hear what she said. Then, without warning, Kyota shouted to the world exactly what she had murmured.
"I would KILL for some steak!"
"Well, I certainly hope not, lest I be the victim!"
Everyone spun in place to see Rupert laughing his head off, and his wife giggling.
"I'm sorry Mr. Hy- Rupert. Joyce. Thank you for your hospitality." Kyota hastened, doing a slight bow.
"You're fine Kyota, no need for an apology." He casually remarked.
"If that is the case sir-" Kyota said before being interrupted by Carlos, putting his hand over her mouth.
"Sir if I may we are fine wi- AAHK!" Carlos exclaimed, yanking his hand off of Kyota's mouth.
"Did you just lick my hand???" asked Carlos, legitimately confused.
"Hah!" Kyota laughed.
Tui, revoking his silent observer badge went up to the two, still bickering like siblings, and smashed their heads together.
"OOOWWW!" They both shouted, tears forming in their eyes.
"Quiet." Tui ordered.
"Yes, sir..."
The two immediately sprang to attention in order to avoid more punishment from their superior.
"Ahem."
The room went silent at the sound of Griffin clearing his throat, all the attention going to him.
"If I may, when are we scheduled to leave? I'm quite excited to see it." Griffin said in the most monotone tone Daniel had ever heard.
Rupert, caught slightly off guard, said "Oh! Y-yes of course. We leave in half an hour, everyone finish up and be ready at the door at that time."
The twins were the first to leave, the word 'nope' practically written all across their faces. Griffin was next to go, then finally Daniel. They both went up to the grandiose staircase, about 2 meters behind Heaven and Neaveh, all of them nervous and ignorant to the conversation happening behind them.
A woman's voice said something in a hushed tone.
Rupert smiled wide, and simply said, "No clue."
______
It was 5:30, and everyone was packed and ready. Everyone except...
"Heaven! You got everything?" Neveah yelled down the hall, slightly worried.
"Yep, coming!" She yelled back.
She emerged with quite the appearance. With sunscreen slathered over her entire body, sunglasses in her loosely braided hair, and a sunhat under her arm, it looked as if her one archenemy was the sun itself.
"Yikes sis, what did the sun ever do to you?" Neveah inquired jokingly.
"EVERYTHING!" Heaven shouted in protest.
She then started listing all the times the sun had done her wrong, counting on her fingers while doing so, all while Kyota (At Neveah's request) Picked her and her stuff up, carried her down the stairs and plopped her down with the others. Neveah finally flicking Heaven's cheek to get her to stop.
"YEOOW! The heck was that for?" Heaven snapped, reaching for her cheek.
"We get it, you don't like the sun," Neveah said.
Heaven grabbed her pack, sunscreen bottles where water was supposed to go and walked out the door to the plane.
Daniel finally worked up the nerve to ask Neveah something, but before his mouth had opened, Neveah sighed and apologized.
"Sorry about that, she gets like that sometimes. Some people think I am three years older than her when really it's more like 3 minutes."
And she was right, Daniel thought. Neveah was taller and more mature than her smaller, more child-like sister. But that wasn't what he wanted to ask.
"Um, if I may," A voice from elsewhere chimed in, "How are you two so different in skin tones if you are twins?"
Well if that wasn't straight to the point Daniel didn't know what was. He looked at the man named Griffin with a stunned and studying look. He was completely calm, his face in the poker face Daniel had gotten accustomed to. Griffin made eye contact with Daniel for a split second before Daniel looked away. He finally concluded Griffin wasn't good at being in a group, or maybe even socializing at all.
But Neveah didn't seem to mind. The response felt rehearsed, recited as if she had answered that question a million times.
"When my sister and I were in the womb, I gained all the melanin from when the egg split, leaving me super dark and my sister an albino. Melanin, of course, meaning the dark skin pigment."
"We know what melanin is." Griffin snapped. Nevaeh continued paying no mind to him.
"They actually named the phenomenon after us, Charpentier disorder. Quite the accomplishment huh?" She half-heartedly asked. The two had to admit, that was pretty extraordinary.
"You nerds coming or are we leaving without ya?" Carlos shouted into the mansion.
"We're coming, we're coming," Griffin shouted back.
"Come on, we should get going," Daniel suggested as he walked out the door. The rest followed in hot pursuit.
