Dear Daddy
Today was the day, we all stand here now dressed head to toe in black. We gather around your closed casket, some of us crying other's staying strong as they hold the mourners. I for one was the one crying but had no one to hold me, except for our 6 year old son Franklin who was holding my hand. A few people said some things, memories they shared with you, the good times, how much you meant to them. "Does anybody have anything else to say about Michael before we lower the casket?" The priest asked us all. Everyone was silent but suddenly Franklin let go of my hand and raised it, the priest gave a slight smile and motioned for him to come up. He walks up to where you are currently laying and he takes his bag off of his back, he opens it up and pulls out a toy. A little blue monkey, he looks at me and I rush up to hold him up as he lays the blue monkey on top of your casket. He moves his hands telling me to go back as he pulls out a piece of paper and stands up straight and looks at everybody, he clears his throat and un-crinkles the paper. He squints his eyes and tries his best to read what was written on the note, "Dear daddy, I wrote this letter for you, my teacher Mrs.K helped me to write this. Last night when mommy put me to bed she told me you were not coming home, but when I asked her why she just cried. I do not know why, she said you were in a good new home now, that sometimes people have to leave so that they can watch over us better. I miss you daddy, you were on a trip with your work when I last talked to you a week ago, I wish you could stay longer. Mommy says I will see you again in a long time from now, I wish I could see you now. I love you daddy, love Franklin." He folds his note and I can see little tears forming in his eyes, he grabs his bag and runs to me. I kneel down and open my arms wide before giving him the biggest hug, tears ran down my burning cheeks and into the grass. I look at Franklin and smile and wipe his tears away, "that was realy amazing Franklin, I bet daddy loved it." I said to him and he smiles before taking my hand as I stand up, everybody now in tears. "We will be lowering the casket now," the priest said as we all stepped closer. Slowly the casket lowered with the slightly ripped blue monkey on top of it, we all looked in as in got deeper until it was all the way at the bottom. Then it was over, people with blood shot eyes slowly make there way back to their cars as people hugged eachother and me apoligizing for my loss and telling Franklin that the letter was really nice, and that was it, you will live on forever in our hearts Michael.
