"Because she's dating me, dumbass."
Jack's words echo in my mind and it takes all of my might to keep my jaw from dropping.
"Oh really?" Jaden's jaw clenches.
"For a matter of fact, yes." Pulling the phone away from his ear, he reaches over the table and takes hold of my hand, lightly kissing the top. He then looks up and makes eye contact, winking at me. "right babe?"
The tenseness in my chest slacks, and I feel completely at ease, hearing Johnson's calm voice reaching out to me. I offer a warm smile, and try my best to gaze back as lovingly as I could imagine. "Right."
I hold Jack's stare for a couple more seconds before looking back up at Jaden's steely grey eyes. It's nothing like Jack's warm, caring stare. It's cold and angry. I bite my lip for a second , hoping he bought our little act.
"Okay," his voice comes out sharp, and sarcastic. "Sorry for bothering you, lovebirds."
He stalks off, back to where his friends are sitting. They whisper a ton and glance over at us - still holding hands - before moving to a table out of sight. I look back at Jack and he raises his eyebrows.
"You okay?" he asks in a low, slow tone.
I nod at him,blushing. "Thanks."
"Okay, give me a minute to just get the rest of what everyone wanted and then we can get out of here." He smiles at me, squeezing my hand before putting his phone back up to his ear. I smirk at him as he goes back to talking on the phone. I play with his fingers on my hand, until he pushes the notepad he was using to write down everyone's requests on over to my side of the table. At first I'm confused but then he raises his eyebrows at our intertwined hands, and I realize that he can't hold the phone, my hand and write. So using my idle hand, I copy down everything he dictates. When that's finally done, we go to the order the food. I'm about to give the lady the cash for Brooke, Lex and I, but Jack hands her his debit instead. I give him an angry look and an exasperated sigh, and he just laughs and shrugs his shoulders.
As we leave the restaurant hand in hand, I notice Jaden and his friends are leaning against the wall outside. Jack pulls me into his side, letting go of my hand and wrapping his arm around my waist. As we walk to the car, I hear laughing behind me and something thinly pointed hits my head. I look to the ground to see a paper airplane at my feet. I pick it up and unfold it to see a note was left on the inside.
Call me whenever you're done with this dweeb;) Jaden<3 359-258-4715
Johnson looks over my shoulder, stopping behind me. I can feel him tense against me, and I look up at him, offering a warm smile and a squeeze of the hand. He seems to calm after that. I turn around and crumple the paper up into a ball and look around for the nearest garbage can. It's not too far from where I'm standing and right beside Jaden's entourage. Perfect. I mimic a jump shot, arcing the paper ball towards the garbage, anddddd it makes it in! Jaden's crew turns to stare at me.
"KOBEY!" I yell and flash them a piece sign with the biggest smile I can muster. I grab Jack's hand and start sprinting to the car. He's laughing and I hear him yell "YEET!" behind me and soon I'm laughing too. He opens the door to the car and we jump in on either side.
"Oh my gosh, they're coming!" I screech, seeing the three tall boys slowly walking away from their little hangout and coming towards us. "Drive, Drive, Drive!"
Johnson fumbles with his keys before finally starting the car, and pulling out of the driveway, leaving three stupid guys standing alone in the middle of the parking lot.
