Chapter One - Gas Station

The shoe box was sitting on the bedside table. Untouched. It had been there for a month, since the day he left. She could remember that day perfectly, waking up and reaching over, feeling around for Calum's hand. Only she didn't feel the warmth of his skin - oh no, instead she felt the smooth side of a piece of paper. That one god damn note that ruined her. She still didn't understand why, he said he was leaving to make her happy - couldn't he see how that only did the opposite?

The shoe box was the only thing he left her with, besides the note. She just never had the courage to open it. But she knew she had to, she would never move on if she didn't. Slowly, she reached to open the lid. She gasped, inside were a bunch of pictures - polaroids, and some handwritten notes. She reached for the first note, it was dated 3/18/2010, the day they met. She began to read it,

Diana. Isn't that a beautiful name? I think it is, it's even better because the girl it belongs to happens to be beautiful as well. Yeah, I met a girl. Today, actually. It was at a gas station, so romantic, right? I remember she was having problems with filling her tank, and I walked out to help her. As much as I'd love to say I helped her because I wanted to, it was actually more because I had to. It was my job, after all. I asked her what was wrong and she told me that the gas pump wasn't working. She was almost in tears, but why would she be crying over a broken gas pump? "Because, I'm going to be late and my sister is going to kill me - actually, no. That's not why. But honesty the reason is none of your business so just fix this already, I mean, that's your fucking job, right?" That was the reason she gave. Well, she definitely wasn't happy. I, of course, fixed it. And as she was leaving she smiled at me, "look, I'm honestly sorry for how I reacted back there, I'm just... Going through a lot right now and um, my mom's- she's in the hospital. That's why I'm in such a rush." She sped off before I could respond. But I remember one thing - her smile was beautiful.

I was in tears by the time I finished reading the note. I can't believe he wrote this down. I can't believe he remembered exactly what I said. I looked at the other side of the note, seeing a polaroid taped to the back. The picture was of the gas station, or, more specifically, of pump 6 - the one where we met.

yay for short, shitty chapters am i right. ok so this one obviously sucked but that basic idea of this book is each chapter is going to be a different note and picture, and basically, you'll learn about calum and diana's relationship through the notes. i hope that idea doesn't suck to much??? anyway, i'll update again soon (this weekend probably) so until then - xoxo delilah
