"then you fold it over, and then ta-da! it's a paper heart."
it had been two months since lucas woke up from his coma and he was still being hospitalized until further notice. jungwoo had took it upon himself to come and visit lucas everyday because he was the first face he saw when he woke up, besides his doctors. lucas had started regaining simple memories, like how to drink from a straw and hold a pencil correctly, but jungwoo was always there to help him when he needed it.
the two were sitting on lucas's hospital bed with the desk pulled down and resting on their laps. jungwoo had brought origami paper this time around and he asked lucas what he wanted to make.
"hmm... a heart."
"why a heart lucas?"
"because whenever i look at you, i feel my insides feel all warm and mushy. especially my heart."
though his words should've made jungwoo feel delightful, the male couldn't help but feel a pain in his chest. if he acted like the older one on the night of the accident, lucas wouldn't be here confused about his feelings. he couldn't help but feel guilty for everything that happened.
but nonetheless, it was over, and jungwoo slapped on a smile over the frown that had appeared on his face. 'for lucas,' he thought.
as he folded the paper back, forth, on the side, and on the back, lucas' eyes lit up and he moved closer to jungwoo. the elder male's heart fluttered when he felt the male's presence closer than ever.
"n-now it's your turn," jungwoo stuttered out, hopping off the bed and pulling out a piece of pink origami paper for lucas.
the male quickly set off folding the paper like how jungwoo did. after a few moments of silence, lucas triumphantly lifted up his paper heart. "i did it!" he cheered with a blinding grin on his face, and jungwoo couldn't help but smile back.
"you should smile more jungwoo-hyung," lucas said. "you look better smiling."
"but i do smile," jungwoo pouted as he slid back onto the bed next to the male.
"yeah, but..." lucas looks down at his hands. "...you know how your favorite color is yellow?"
when jungwoo nodded, lucas continued. "when you were telling me about yourself and how your favorite color is yellow, you were smiling. because the sun is yellow, and you love the sun. and because i loved the sun, you said you loved me. you were smiling brightly then. when i meant you should smile more, i meant those type of smiles."
"aw lucas," jungwoo sighed, placing his hand on top of the male's hands. "after what happened to you, i can't smile as bright as i used to."
"but why? is it because of me?"
"no—"
"but it has to be!" lucas exclaimed. "i know something happened between us before i lost my memories, and i know i can't change it or remember, but i want to make things right. for the sake of us, for you."
jungwoo's heart almost shattered when he looked up to meet lucas' eyes. they were hopeful, but heartbroken, lost even.
the elder sighed. "alright. but i'll help you. you don't have to figure things out by yourself. we'll do it together"—he picks up the paper heart lucas had made with one hand and intertwined their hands with the other—"one paper heart at a time."
