Chapter 12: How Many?

The next day Rebecca came in with Dr Danielle Cooper the fertility specialist. "Marissa James have you two decided how many you want her to freeze?' Rebecca said 

"Three.." Bucky said 

"Okay then..let's get started Mr Barnes this nurse here will take you where you need to go and I will take Marissa back for the egg removal surgery." Dr Cooper said

"Wait..there was more she wanted to say." Bucky said 

"I want three embryos to be frozen but please save some eggs in case we want more." she said 

"Okay we can do both." Dr Cooper said as she wrote it in her chart. 

Bucky kissed her "I love you and I'll see you when you get done." 

"I love you too." she said as she kissed him again. 

Bucky got in the room and swallowed hard and let out a breathe. He sat down on the bed in the on call room they were letting him use. He started to stroke himself as he thought about Marissa. Thirty minutes later he was giving the cup to the nurse and went back to Marissa's room. They wheeled her back in a few minutes after he came in and Dr Cooper said "She did great we will take care of the rest from here." 

"Thank you." he said 

A few hours later Rebecca came in with another doctor Bucky looked at his sister "I know that look what's wrong.." he said 

Marissa said "Dr Thomas..why are you here?' 

"Who is Dr Thomas.." Bucky said

"She's my oncologist...I don't understand.." she said as Dr Cooper came back in the room. 

"Okay now I'm scared." Marissa said 

Dr Thomas said "Only one of your ovaries were viable honey..we found two tiny tumors on your left ovary so while Dr Cooper was in there she went did a biopsy and they were malignant. She made the right ovary was clean and it was so we were able to freeze your eggs and embryos from the right ovary." 

"So I have two.." she said 

"Yes but the chemo is gonna work  it's early stages for both." Dr Thomas said 

"Yeah.." she said 

"So when Dr Barnes is removing the tumors Dr Cooper will be in there to go back in and to remove your left ovary." Dr Thomas said 

"Great.." Marissa said 

She looked over to see her brother again. "Freaking go away Mitchell..unless you are here for a reason just go away.." she yelled as she held her head and started to cry uncontrollably. 

The nurse came in and gave her a sedative Bucky laid there by her side and held her and went to sleep as she went to sleep. Becca came in to check on her saw her brother holding her and swallowed hard. She had been helping her little brother make it on his own after their mom kicked him out and it caused a big rift in their family. 

The next morning she drove out to her mom's house Winnie answered the door. "Becca..what are you doing here." Winnie said 

"Come with me.." she said

"Why would I go anywhere with you. You are enabling your little brother and his alcoholism and drug abuse. Even paying for his apartment and car insurance cause he's using his band money for drugs." Winnie said 

"Damn it mom just come with me." Becca said 

Winnie got in her daughter's car "I know you hate me mom. Okay I get that but you need to remember that James was 14 years old when we lost dad. He was finally getting the relationship that he's always wanted with dad since he retired from the army. He didn't know how to handle it at 14 all he knew was dad left him. And yes he turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with it but that doesn't mean you kick him out." Rebecca said 

"Is he dead is that where you are taking me.." Winnie said

"no..I want you to see something though. I currently have his girlfriend as a patient she's been a patient of mine since she was 14. It's the girl he's always writing about but was to scared to say anything." Becca said 

They got upstairs to the cancer floor and she let her mom peak in to find Bucky holding Marissa as they both laid on their sides. They went back out in the hall "He's not left her side in the last three days. He came into my office three days ago yelling cause she was having a debilitating migraine. James told them that  I was his sister and his girlfriend needed to be seen. And he's not left her side he's being dad. Marissa's brain cancer has gone into remission and we found out yesterday after they wanted to freeze embryos that one of her ovaries had two tiny malignant tumors. So there's that he was the one that said that he loves her enough to do the embryos they have chosen three. He sat by her side as we did tests. He loves that girl in there mom and right now all I see is dad like when you had your breast cancer." Rebecca said 

"He's still there mom he just doesn't deal with pain well and likes to hide it."  Rebecca said as she drove her mom home. 

Later that morning Marissa was in the chemo room with Bucky sitting beside her. They hooked her up and she swallowed hard. "Oh god.." she whispered as she started to feel its effects and started to feel nauseous and started to dry heave.  

"What?' he said

The nurse picked up the puke bucket and Marissa puked as Bucky held her hair back then rubbed her back. She wiped her mouth "Are you sure Buck you can handle this?' she said

"I can..I know I can..I'm not going anywhere baby I'm here to stay..." he said as he moved her hair out of her face. 

"Do something for me.." she said as she puked again. 

"Anything baby.." he said 

"Tell Micah..oh god..the band ..." she said but then had to puke again as she squeeed his hand. 

Then she heard Mitchell "Give Micah the band sis let him and Cassie take over. You need to focus on getting better. Let them take over it was killing you baby sister" 

She looked beside her to see him. 

"Tell Micah that the band is his and that the cancer is back." she said 

"Okay baby.." he said as he found her phone in his hoodie and sent Micah the text.
