Me and Knox arrive at the hospital around noon. "What if daddy wakes up today?" Knox asks while skipping through the parking lot, "Will he be able to come home?" "Not today," I tell him. He stops skipping and looks at me. "Why not? I thought when he wakes up he can come home," Knox looks at me with sad eyes. "Well Knox the doctors have to make sure he's okay to come home. That might take a couple days." "Oh," he says looking down at the ground. "But when he does wake up we can visit him every day until he can come home." "Yay!" Knox shouts. "We have to be quiet when we get inside," I say shushing him.
We enter the hospital and walk to the front desk. "I'm here to see Brendon Weekes," I say. "And what's your name?" The older lady asks. "Dallon Weekes." "Okay. The long term care unit on floor six, room 633," she says. I mean I already knew that but, "Thank you," I say. Me and Knox get on the elevator and ride up to floor six. When we get off we check in at the front desk. Then a nurse leads us back to Brendon's room. We enter the room Knox runs over to him and gives him a hug. "Happy annibersary daddy." I giggle. And walk over to Brendon. I pull up a chair next to his bed, sit down and hold his hand.
I'm holding back my tears. Today is gonna be a happy day. "Hey Bren. So I hear you might wake up soon. I really hope you do. But if you need more time to heal that's okay," I say. "No it's not! Daddy needs to wake up today! Tell him he needs to wake up today!" Knox says. "We don't want him to wake up until he's ready Knox. You don't want him to be hurt right?" I ask. "I guess," he says as he shrugs his shoulders. "But just know daddy I really want you to wake up. I miss you.
I m-miss playing games with you," Knox says tearing up. I motion for him to come to me. He runs over. I pick him up and set him down on my lap. "Dad likes to act like he's alwight that you're asleeping but he's not. I hear him cry at night and I cry too. So please heal faster." I give Knox a hug. I hold Brendon's hand again. "I love you," I say. Knox also holds his hand and says, "I lub you too." Brendon's hand twitches in mine. "Did you see that?!" Knox says excitedly. "What?" I ask. Because I wasn't really paying attention. "Daddy's hand moved!" He squeals. "Really?!" I ask. "Yeah!"
"Brendon if you can hear me squeeze my hand," I say. He doesn't do it. I lose hope for a couple seconds until I feel his hand tighten around mine. "We have to tell the nurse!" I tell Knox, "stay here with daddy I'll be right back." I rush out of the room and find one of the nurses doing rounds. "I think my husband's waking up!" I say. "Which patient is that?" The nurse asks. "Brendon Weekes." She looks for his name on her chart that she's holding. "Ah yes Brendon. I will be in your room in just a second," the nurse says.
I walk back to Brendon's room. "Dad I'm getting him to respond to me!" Knox says. "How?" I ask. "One squeeze means yes and two means no. Ask him a question!" "Okay. Can you hear me?" I ask him while holding his hand. He squeezes one time. "Can you open your eyes?" Two squeezes. "That's alright you don't have to open them right away. Um. Could you hear us talking the whole time we were here?" I ask. One squeeze. "I already asked that dad!" Knox laughs. "Well I didn't know that."
The nurse knocks on the door. "Come in," I say. She opens the door. "So you think he's waking up?" She asks. "Yeah! He's squeezing my hand and answering questions!" Knox says cheerfully. The nurse walks over to Brendon. She put two finger on his hand and tells him to squeeze. He does as told then she does the same with the other hand. He squeezes. Again. Then she stands at his feet. She puts her hands on the bottom of his feet and tells him to push his feet against her hand. He does as told. Then she takes a flash light and shines it in his eyes.
"So?" I ask. "He's responsive. That's a sign that he's awake. Now it's just any minute until he opens his eyes. He might not be able to talk right away and that's normal. He needs to get used to talking again. I'm going to be at the nurses station if you need anything. My name is Jenna," she says. "Thank you Jenna," I say. She walks out of the room. "Daddy's gonna wake up today!" I tell Knox. "Yay!" He cheers and claps his hands. Then he runs and gives Brendon a hug. I go and join them.
We sit and talk to Brendon for a few hours. He squeezes our hands whenever we ask a question. Knox eventually turns on the TV to watch cartoons. I rest my head on Brendon's chest. Knox turns around to ask me about dinner then squeals in excitement. I look up and see Brendon with his eyes open. I hug him. "Thank you Brendon," I say with tears in my eyes, "this is the best anniversary ever."
As Brendon slowly starts talking he asks what happened. I tell him about the accident an how he was in a coma. Then I tell him about how I would messaged him on Snapchat and told him about how my day went. I told him how sometimes it would make me feel like he was still awake. Then I handed him his phone so he could read all the messages. His eyes start watering.
"You don't have to Snapchat me ever again. I'm awake and I'm never leaving your guy's' side again."
