Thinking with your stomach

I did my usual rounds, circling the island. Making sure the fishing boats stayed away from my home; swimming around, watching the fish move by me, rubbing my hands on some of the nicer sharks sides as I slid by them, and taking a second here and there to admire how the light danced off of the scales of my tail through the water. Deciding to call it a night, as the half moon slowly started to rise over the horizon, I headed to the beach. I let the water guide me towards the still warm sand.

Sand started clumping under my forearms as I army crawled my body up the beach till I was out of the waters reach. Tired and knowing that I have a bit of a hike I decide to lay my hand out in front of me and slowly turn it into a fist. The heat started to slowly evaporate the water on my body, carefully I dragged the heat down my tail. Scrunching my face up a bit as the water sizzled against my tail. Out of my three powers this is definitely the most useful, but I try not to use it because it's the most dangerous and the most uncontrollable. If I move my hand slightly too fast the next thing I know I'm on fire.

After the steam cleared and I saw my lightly tanned legs again, it took a minute to stand up. My muscles still trying to realize that they were no longer a tail. After a few seconds muscle memory kicked in again and I started running into the forest. No one lived on this island because of all the endangered animals and the coral reef, it was hard to get to this island. Sometimes you will get a research team out here, counting fish populations or tracking animals on the island.

During those times I either stay completely on the island or in the water, just for safety measures. I followed the path that I made over the years leading up to the center of the island. There was a waterfall there, and that is where I slept. Either in the almost 200 feet (60 meters) deep pond at the bottom or in the spacious cave behind the water. Thanks to my fishiness I don't have to worry about the cold, even when I have my legs out. My body generates heat quick enough to get me through the nights relatively comfortably.

I couldn't stop the small smile that unconsciously tugged at my lips as I saw the moon reflecting off of the water in the pond. Carefully, I shifted the water near the wall to move so I can get through to the cave without getting wet. The moonlight penetrated the water and danced against the walls of the cave. As soon as I entered, the little purple gems that scattered the walls glowed brightly as I walked by them.

The same kind of Gem was in my necklace, almost instantly after I walked into the cave it lifted slightly off my chest, wanting to glow with the other gems. Soon, as I stood in the middle of the cave, the darkness that once consumed it was sprinkled with purple lights like how stars light up the night sky. By now the small smile that once grazed my face was replaced my a cheshire cat smile and a strong feeling of home.

This was my favorite spot on the island. As I walked near the wall to my right the gems glowed brighter as if they wanted me near them. I lightly sat down on the almost white sand, and rested my back against the smooth rock. Lightly I started humming a lullaby that my mom used to sing to me. My eyes were begging to close, seeming to have developed a mind of their own, I gave in and sleep soon washed over me as the lullaby neared its end.

I didn't get to sleep for long as a loud scream was released, startling me awake. With adrenaline and the protectiveness of my home running through my veins, I dashed out of the cave and towards where the scream came from. Only to stop at the tree line near the beach.

There was a woman with bright red hair in the water trying to swim away from one of the sharks. I looked over as the yelling soon reached my ears. There were four men and a woman, all clearly drunk, on a boat near my home trying to get her close to the boat to get her back on board. But the sharks were hungry, soon they were circling her waiting to see which of them was going to make the first move.

The sight enraged me. Not only were there people close to my island but the sharks were being assholes and only thinking with their stomachs again. Knowing that I was too far away for my powers to reach the people to help them, I took a deep breath and ran into the water. I was about waist deep before I dived in and felt my tail reform.

I swam over to the girl as fast as I could, trying my hardest to not been seen. A few of the sharks saw me then decided to be smart for once and swam away. As for the others I had to swim up underneath the woman and try my hardest to swipe them away with my tail. They got scared and left but kept trying to come back.

Having had enough with them and wanting to go back to sleep, I wrapped my arm around the waist of the woman, as she took a big breath, and dragged her under. I didn't care if she saw me as I swam her closer to the boat. Once we were near the side of it I pushed her up to the surface so she could swim to the railing at the end of the boat.

Luckily she was still really freaked out and immediately did what I had hoped. But not before grabbing my wrist tightly and pulling me too. I tried to get out of her grasp but she had a death grip. All of the men were concerned as they pulled her out of the water. I did the only thing that I could think of and grabbed onto the railing trying to not get pulled up too.

"Let go of me!" I yelled at her which startled her and made her somehow tighten her hold on me. If she went any tighter she would break my wrist. The man with blue eyes and long blond hair grabbed my upper arm, my eyes widened as what they were trying to do set in. In an attempt to stay in the water I slammed my whole tail against the bottom of the boat. Not only effectively rocking the boat and disorientating them for a second, but also preventing me from getting pulled up any further.

As the boat rocked they let go of me and I didn't hesitate to immediately push myself back under and super swim away. Terrified, I swam all the way to the mainland. After beaching myself behind some rock I steam dried and walked along the beach. Keeping my head down as I stepped onto the boardwalk, and attempted to "casually" walk towards Addi's house. Her house is the only place that I can think of to go to.
