Apparently, showing up at your friends house at 1:45 in the morning will make your friend concerned. As soon as she opened the door she pulled me in and sat me down before bombarding me with questions, the sleepiness that was there a few seconds ago having completely vanished."... so I came here to hide out for the night before going back to my island." I finished explaining to her.
"What did the people on the boat look like?" She questioned further.
"Um well the guy that tried to 'help' me out of the water had long blond hair, was built like a god and had blue eyes. The girl was that surrounded had bright red hair, and was curvy. And the only thing that stood out about one of the guys on the boat was a triangular bright blue glowing thing in the middle of his chest. I know it's not a lot to go off of but their not from around here. They weren't on a fishing boat." I finish.
"Oh shit." She says, leaving me sitting there confused.
"What? Do you know them? Do they know about me?" My confusion was slowly turning into worry.
"I know OF them. If I showed you a picture of them do you think you could recognize them?" She asks without clearing up any of my confusion or worry.
"Uh, yeah? Probably. Why?" I wonder completely confused at this point. She then pulls out her phone and types something in before showing me a picture of the people and a few others that I haven't seen before.
"Yeah, that's them. I'm sorry, but what's going on here?" I reply, not being able to handle my curiosity anymore.
"You saved black widow. You know, one of the avengers that I told you about? The avengers? The people that let a city fall that killed thousands of people?" She reminds me.
"Oh... Oh shit." I say as it clicks in my head. She just gives me this worried look.
"Well, on that note the sun's gonna be coming up soon so I better get going. It's a lo-" I start but she cuts me off.
"Oh you have completely lost your mind if you think your going back to the island," I give her a confused look and slightly tilt my head like a puppy before she sighs and continues," look, the avengers are apart of an organization called shield. Everything that they do gets reported to them. And as soon as they hear reports of a mermaid from Earth's mightiest heroes they're going to check it out. When they find you, your going to be taken and experimented on again." She urges the point to me.
"I highly doubt that. Look, what are they going to report? That they were drunk on a boat, one of them fell off and was saved by someTHING. Only one of them got the opportunity to see my tail, which she probably didn't even see because she was so panicked. And again, all of them were clearly drunk and with the adrenaline going through their veins they could have easily IMAGINED that they were saved by someone instead of the sharks just losing interest." I argued but she still looked unsure.
"Beside if one of them started going off about mermaids being real, shield is just going to think that they've gone insane. You have to admit that it's far fetched, even, for 'Earth's mightiest heroes.'" I finish convincing her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before laughing lightly.
"Your right. I mean who would believe that mermaids exist. Mermaid are just fairy tales to everyone." We laugh and joke about my secret until about 10 o'clock before we decide it's time for me to go back to the island. I grab an apple from her kitchen before she walks me to the front door. I step outside into the cold and windy air before I hear the door closing and the click of the lock behind me.
I take a hair tie and tie my hair into a bun before walking off the porch. I take a shaky breath as the wind beats lightly against my exposed arms. The coldness of the air seeps through my dark blue leggings to nip at my legs. I started munching on my apple as I start my walk back towards the beach. I breathe a sigh of relief as my fishy genes started kicking in and my body starts to become warm again. My walk to the boardwalk wasn't exactly pleasant. People kept pushing me around to get to wear they were trying to go faster. And there wasn't anything I could do about it because of my small dancer like frame.
Luckily the walk was pretty short. It was only about a half hour until my feet slightly sunk into the hot sand and my senses were consumed by the smell and feel of the beach. I threw the apple away before trudging further down the sand and towards some big rocks that would give me privacy to run into the ocean. I am not pleased to see that a group of teenagers have stolen my hideout. They haven't noticed me so I turn around and walk back the way I came. Stupid teenagers. Stupid civilians, being too dumb to use my powers on without giving myself away.
I keep thinking of insults about those teenagers and people in general before I see one of my favorite hideout places. The library. Momentarily, I forget about the morons that are teenagers and beeline to the library. As soon as I make it inside I am greeted by the familiar faces of the librarians.
"We just got done updating our mythology and science fiction sections if your interested." Debbie tells me before going back to putting books on the shelves. I smile brightly at her before making my way there. I become ecstatic at the sight of all new mermaid folklore books. I take the first three I see and sit down and one of the nearby tables.
The first one is about mermaids in Greek and Roman mythology. The second is essentially a mermaid 101 guide complete with general history, stereotypes and why their wrong, and my personal favorite; spells. The third is in Latin and is pretty much just filled with stories and research "proving" that they are real and where they most likely live. The third one disappointed me because none of it was close to right and they didn't really have any viable sources. As I stand up and turn around I bump into someone and, of course, drop my books.
"Sorry. I didn't know that you were behind me." I say quickly, looking up at them as we both crouch down to gather the books.
"It's alright. I shouldn't have been looking over your shoulder." A brown haired woman with an accent that I can't quite place, replies back. The books are back in my hand and I nod to her with a small smile, as a silent thanks, before returning to where I had taken the books from. I had placed the books back in their exact places and give the other books a glance over. Much to my disappointment, I couldn't find anything good so I headed out and back towards the beach, in hopes that the teens had gotten bored and left.
Luck was on my side because when I returned to the private area there was no one in sight. I smiled and let out a breath of relief before turning and running into the water, in desperate need to get back home. Any thoughts or worries about that had happened last night had been shoved out of my mind; as the excitement of being on my island again devoured my thoughts and emotions.
While I was on my way back home my heart hitched in my throat at what I saw in front of me. eight fishing boats. Two of which had sea turtles in the nets. I popped my head out of the water to look on the decks of the boats for anything that I could use to cut the nets. I wasn't until I approached the fifth boat that I finally spotted a knife near the edge of it. Suddenly becoming ecstatic by the convenience I waited until the fisherman's backs were turned before I reached my hand up and grabbed it.
I silently used my tail as a weight to bring me back under the ocean's surface. Smiling as I held the knife in my hand I swam back over to one of the nets that one of the turtles were caught in. I gripped the knife tightly as it started to cut through the hard to grip nets. After the turtle had escaped I quickly made my way over to the other turtle which was starting to panic and drown. I broke my heart to see it like this, which only urged me to hurry up while cutting the ropes. As soon as the hole was big enough I grabbed the turtle by rim of its shell and swam it to the surface knowing that it would be to weak to reach the surface by itself.

By the way the necklace that is up top is her necklace that was talked about last chapter. It took me a bit to find the picture that I wanted to use but now you guys know what it looks like. The next chapter you will see a "men's styled" version of the necklace. This will come into play later.
