Chapter 6:
I hear the house phone ring, and more thunder. I answer, "Hello?"
"HELLO!?" they shriek.
"Who is this?" I shake, hearing the rain fall harder.
"It's Mr. Mendes!" he yells through the phone,
"YOUR tree fell into our house, and we have no where to stay. I'm sorry, but the storm is terrible and my family and I need a place to stay and-"
"Yes, of course, come over, hurry," I say and hang up. I run down the stairs just in time to hear a knock on the door, and I see a family of four. Mr.Mendes, his wife, his son, and his daughter. They're all completely drenched, all with pale faces. "Come in!" I yell over the sound of the storm, and open the door. They rush inside, soaking wet. I look outside for a moment, and I can't see anything. Just the flooded road and the pounding rain into the dark mist. I slam the door shut. "I'm terribly sorry about the tree-" I start and get interrupted by Mrs. Mendes,
"Don't apologize. It's not your fault,"and I sigh.
"Where are your parents?" the little girl asks me, she looks young.
"Not here," I say worriedly. I'm kind of embarrased to say that I've never met the neighbors, but they seem very friendly. The boy, he's super cute. "I'm sorry, I never introduced myself, I'm Chloe," I say to the family.
"I'm Mr.Mendes, and this is my wife, and my son, Shawn, and my daughter, Aaliyah," he says. Shawn looks at me for a quick second, worriedness in his big brown eyes. The pounding of the rain gets louder, and then I feel something cold trickle at my feet, it's the water leaking into the house!
"It's flooding!" Aaliyah screams.
"Upstairs!" Mrs.Mendes says as she runs up to the second floor. I lead everyone into my room and shut the door. They all take a seat on my bed, and look panic-stricken. Shawn gets up quietly and looks out of the window to see the houses demolished, his house crumbled. Cars floating down the street, and his eyes flame with worry.
He breathes slowly, and finally speaks, "This is much more than a storm. This is a hurricane," Aaliyah finally starts to cry. Mrs.Mendes comforts her as Mr.Mendes thinks about how his house is completely gone. The thunder gets louder, and it roars nearly over my head. I run to the window, next to Shawn and watch the flooded street raise higher. Tornado clouds are in the distance, and I want to break down and cry. I finally let loose. I cry, and bury my face into my hands, and wonder: where are my parents? my brother? are they alive? when will this be over? are we going to die? I feel someone pull me into a hug of comfort. I look up, and see Shawn holding me tightly.
I'm shaking, "We're going to die," I whisper into his ear. He rests his head on mine, and holds me tight into his arms, and he says, "We're going to be alright," I've never been so scared in my life, but I have no choice but to trust these strangers with my life, and hope everything will be okay as i'm here in Shawn's arms. I close my eyes and cry because I can't even look out the window anymore; the hail is cracking it. I scream, and suddenly the window cracks.
