the size of the rink was the first thing i noticed when we all entered it for practice. the second thing, was all the state championship flags. and thirdly, i noticed the diligent varsity players, who were practicing in front of us.
"they look pretty good." luis admitted, watching as they played. i nodded in agreement, noticing that they seemed to be very talented.
julie looked up at the ceiling, at the rows and rows of championship flags,"they sure won a lot of championships."
charlie tried to reassure us,"they're not so hot. come on guys, we could skate out there."
i shook my head, not sure that was true. but i had to stick with my team, so i skated with them to get on the ice.
however, it would seem varsity knew exactly what we were doing, because they met us at the door, the captain smirking,"if it isn't captain duckie."
fulton sneered,"get your dirty hands off of him."
the boy gasped facetiously,"ooh a bash brother. i'm so scared."
i rolled my eyes, tired of the unnecessary back and forth,"come on, riley, that's enough."
he eyed me for a moment, shaking his head in disappointment as he let out a breath,"slater, you're better than this."
i looked down at the ice, choosing not to respond while i waited for him to skate away with his team.
once they were fully gone, we all got on the ice, warming up before our new coach arrived.
"you know him?" fulton asked, crossing his arms over his chest.
i nodded slowly, deciding it would be best to just tell the entire truth,"yep, we used to date, our families are really close."
goldberg scoffed,"of course."
i narrowed my eyes at the second string goalie, immediately becoming defensive,"what's that supposed to mean?"
he shrugged simply, but clearly had his opinions on the matter,"just no surprise, is all."
i was about to jump goldberg, when guy interjected,"shut up, goldberg."
goldberg just held up his hands in surrender and skated away. i let out a breath, putting a hand on my forehead. my helmet rested on my
hip, as i leaned against the rink wall.guy stood in front of me, frowning,"i'm sorry about that, slater."
i nodded, acknowledging his words, but they didn't help at all. it hurt to know that no matter what i did, they just simply didn't trust me.
i wasn't sure where all this had come from, they seemed to trust me just fine at the goodwill games. i guess since word was out that i had been involved with a guy who was gunning for us, i automatically became the enemy.
i watched as my team played a game of roundup, feeling no motivation to play with them.
"guy, slater," dwayne called out, twirling his lasso above his head,"don't think you can get outta this, come on!"
guy smiled reassuringly at the cowboy,"one second, dwayne!" he looked down at me, slipping his glove off to put a hand on my cheek,"you alright?"
i bit the inside of my cheek, analyzing the details of his face. i wasn't alright with any of this, but somehow guy managed to make me feel better just by looking at me.
so, i nodded,"i'm alright, thank you."
he smiled lightly, leaning down to kiss me, when we heard a whistle.
