D A N I

there was a knock on the door and soon luke’s head popped into view.

“hey,” he smiled, his eyes ringed red and a fat envelope in his shaking hands.

“what’s that?” i asked.

“letter’s from calum,” he answered walking over to the bed and passing me the envelope.

“where’s calum?”

“he’s outside waiting, he can’t come in here dani, and you heard what the doctors said. you’ve got to get through this slowly.”

“i know,” i sighed. “i’m just so confused. i hate this damn amnesia!”

“calum’s hoping the letters will help,” luke said giving me a quick hug. i knew he had to leave; he didn’t like leaving calum alone in the waiting room for too long.

“so do i,” i replied. “tell calum i said hi and i’m sorry.”

“i will,” luke smiled weakly exiting the room and leaving me alone again. as the door closed my attention turned to the thick envelope in my hands.

my shaking hands picked at one corner of the envelope too nervous to tear it. eventually i persuaded myself to open it. i ripped open the envelope with a bit too much force, the envelope’s contents spilling over the sheets of the bed. i stared at the envelope in my hand, half a photograph still hanging out of the envelope, the other half upside down on top of the scattered letters.

“shit,” i mumbled taking both halves of the picture and holding them together. it was a picture of me, me and a tall, tanned boy i was assuming was calum. i flipped the photo over and read the caption written in scrawled handwriting.

dani and calum’s one year anniversary 13/12/14

 my hands fumbled through the rest of the papers until i found more photos. it seemed calum and i had a german sheppard puppy named pedro, we shared an apartment next door to luke and lanna. the last picture i found was of a park;

the friday night park; this was our place where we’d get drunk and talk about anything and everything.

i remembered the park, flashbacks invaded my mind one by one.

“why can’t i remember you?” i mumbled to myself thinking back to the last flashback i had.

running around friday night park not giving a fuck, i had a bottle of vodka in my hands and half of my clothes were missing. god bless summer.

“what are you doing? come back here with the alcohol!” an unknown voice shouted while i ran laughing like a maniac.

“you’re gonna have to catch me first!”

“danica, i swear to god if you don’t come back here right now i’ll...”

“you’ll what calum?” i asked stopping in my tracks, turning to face a blurred figure who was taking on the form of the smiling boy from the pictures.

my eyes snapped open to see the same scene i’d been seeing for weeks. my hospital room, everything was so clean and bright that it hurt your eyes if you stared at something for too long.

i couldn’t remember the accident, everyone’s said i was driving tired and i went through a stop sign colliding with the side of a truck.

i woke up 4 days later strapped to no less than 15 machines all monitoring my vital signs. only doctors had been in the room when i first woke up asking me question upon question on what i could remember.

kat, michael, ashton, lanna and luke were the first real people i saw because they were the ones i seemed to remember the most about.

next came kylie, i’d only recently met her because she’d just started dating ashton. they seemed relieved that i remembered them but they all had a pained look in their eyes, the look you’d give someone if their cat died. they kept asking me about calum and as hard as i try i can’t remember anything about him.
