Chapter 7: Birthday Surprise
Emma was allowed to come with me to the party. I was sitting straight, nervous about the random stranger that Kamala aunty is shipping me with. I was wearing a long length sudithar which is known as an Anarkali salwar kameez in North India. It normally made me look taller than I was, Amma insisted that I wore it. I let out s deep sigh in fustration.
"Nithya, relax girl. It's like a blind date and hey, you got a wing girl to save you too. " pointing to herself.
Honestly, this girl was too excited today.
Who could blame her. She was really into this stuff. We never went clubbing or to bars so this was the closest we could get to dating boys.
She did date when we were at university. They broke up when they graduated as he moved to a different country.
I noticed a guy around our age eye Emma in a disgustingly lustful way. It was horrible. As he approached us, I realised that he was the school sleaze who also happened to be at many tamil events of my childhood. IDIOT! Probably the most misconducted tamil I had ever seen.
"Slimeball alert" I whispered to Emma.
She started to scan the room and had her eyes narrowed at the instance she saw him.
He turned to look at her and started rating parts of her. My blood was boiling watching him. When I stood up in fury with my fists clenched, Emma held her hand to block my way. She shot me a look that meant "I'll handle this".
Then I realised it. She was wearing her blogger necklace. I took my phone out ready to capture the moment that was about to occur. As he grabbed onto one of her wrists, Emma managed to slap him. It was epic.
Served that boy right. Now she also had new material for her next blog piece with 2 angles in the footage.
"Don't you dare do that to any girl ever again," Emma roared. It was amazing when she taught people the hard way. She was never a damsel in distress.
With that, the sleaze boy ran away.
"That was great you know. He had that coming for a long time. " said some guy from behind me.
"Thank you. I'm Emma an this is Nithya. "
I shyly smiled. This guy was around our age too. He was dressed in a checked shirt and jeans.
"Good to meet you both. I'm Akilan. You've already been introduced to my asshat cousin- "
"Pillai, I want to show you the boy- oh Raasa you're already here!" The thing I liked about Kamala aunty is that she treats other people's kids as her own especially when it comes to pet names. She always calls me Pillai which means child.
"Pillai, what do you think of him?" she asked right in front of him.
"Why aunty? I only know his name. "
Emma elbowed me and whispered, "Akilan is your blind date lol!"
Both me and Akilan looked at her and went
"Oh!"
"Oh it's a match made in heaven!" she exclaimed. This woman was too fast.
I shot a worried look at Emma and on cue she shouted,
"Kamala aunty you're being called. Someone is complaining about your curry!"
"How can they do that. I'll see to it that they don't fill the place with lies." Kamala aunty went running off.
I could trust that girl with my life to get me out of situations. From all the stories I tell her she knows everyone that I know. So she also knew that Kamala aunty is an exceptional cook and that she knows that herself.
"Um Nithya, so you're the engineer with the new job. "
"And you are the new doctor in town?" I said. TOO CHEESY.
I felt Emma move away so I pulled her because I wasn't going to let her leave me all alone.
"So am I the only one finding this blind date slash arranged marriage thing weird or is that what your expression is about? " he said chuckling at the last question while Emma joined in.
"I told you it was like a blind date!" Emma bursted out, causing us all to laugh.
"So friends?"
"Yep friends. I better be going but I won't leave without both your numbers."
He left soon after.
"He's cute. Are you ready for marriage next sunday?" she asked jokingly. All we had to do now was to avoid Kamala aunty for the rest of the party.
Kamala aunty's grandson was so cute. That baby had the cutest smile. He was clapping at the camera. I was sure the video guys wouldn't have a tough time editing at all.
While we were dodging our way through the crowds at the food queue. I bumped into an elderly lady.
"Nithya, oh its been a long time since I've seen you. I never forget a face you see. How are you child. How is your sister, Bhairavi?"
"Sorry Paatti. You must have me confused, I don't have a sister. "
"Don't joke child. You both have the names of ragas. Nithya kalyani and Bhairavi. She must be married now. Why didn't you invite me to her wedding?"
I felt my head swirl. This was big. This meant something. There was so much more to find out.
