"SAMMIE" I called his name waiting outside his house. Sammie has been my best friend since we were six, that's when my parents adopted me, I had amnesia, I never got those memories back I just made new ones.

Sammie ran outside and hugged me before saying anything, he's always so happy in the morning, even when he feels bad, I however hate the morning, I'm a night owl, that's what Sammie says. I stay up too late so in the mornings I'm too tired to be perky. How we are best friend and opposites like that I don't know, we just are.

"Hey, little miss perky." Sammie said in between chest wracking coughs.

"Hey Sammie, are you sure you don't need to see a doctor?" I asked him.

"Yea... I'm fine."

"Really you don't look so good, you're kind of pale." I said getting in the drivers seat of my car, I always drive Sammie to school. "And your cough is getting worse."

"Yea I'm fine, let's get to school, we have a test today."

The rest of the way to school Sammie's cough just kept getting worse, I started to worry he was going to cough up a lung. Then I saw him, the tracker, he was standing in my parking spot... waiting for Sammie. No, he can't mark Sammie, he's the only person I have. But if Sammie isn't marked and doesn't go to the House of Night, he'll die. I pulled into my parking space and Sammie got out.

The tracker raised his finger and pointed at Sammie's forehead, "Sam Thompson! Night has chosen thee; thy death will be thy birth. Night calls to thee; hearken to Her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the House of Night."

Sammie crumpled in pain and clutched his forehead, then the tracker looked at me and had a shocked expression on his face, he whispered something, I think it was 'the daughter of Nyx' but I don't know, and the tracker left. Sammie looked at me and his new marked shined sapphire against his skin, tears in his eyes.

"Will you take me home?" he asked.

"Yea 'course. I'll help you move too." I told him as he got back into the car and I pulled back out.

When we got back to Sammie's and his parents saw he was marked they cried, and then they helped us pack his things and get them loaded in my car, they couldn't come, work. I drove the hour to the Tulsa House of Night and stopped at the gate. We didn't know what to do, wait for someone? It's the middle of the day, vamps are up at night.

"HELLO!" Sammie yelled, "hello anyone?" we stood their for about ten minutes until someone showed up.

"Hello," said a vampire opening the gate, her tattoos looked like horses, "come in, park over there" she said pointing down the driveway, where we saw another vamp waiting. I drove over to her and parked the car, then I got out. When that vamp saw me she looked surprised to, just like the tracker she said, 'the daughter of Nyx', I don't know what was wrong with them, or what they meant saying that, but I wanted to know.

"You're the second vampire today to look at me and say that, the tracker that marked Sammie did too, so I want to know, what do you mean calling me the daughter of Nyx?" I said to her, showing I wasn't afraid. I rather liked vamps, unlike most other humans.

"Oh, well I'm afraid I cannot tell you that, I am sorry. My name is Thanatos, that is Lenobia." She said, pointing to the vamp with the horse tattoos, who was heading toward, what I assumed to be, the stables.

"Selene, why don't you go back to school. If you hurry you can still make the English test." Sammie said pulling a bag out of the car.

"No, I said I'd help you move and I'm going to. Besides if I take that test now I'll fail." I told him.
