"I can't believe you did this! Again!" I screamed at my boyf- EX boyfriend now I guess. "You promised me it was a one time thing! Do I really mean that little to you that you think you can treat me like a fool? You're a joke Chester! A fucking joke!" I continued to yell as I shoved the rest of my stuff into a duffel bag laying on the bed.
"Lia please-" "NO! You don't get to call me that! You don't get to call me anything, don't even look at me!" I held my arms up as he came towards me.
"Amelia please, you can't leave me! I was just stressed, it calms me down! I need you please!" He yelled as he dropped to his knees trying to take my packing hands into his as tears ran down his face.
Taking a deep breath I removed my hands finished zipping up my bag, tugged it onto my shoulder and began to walk towards the door.
"You don't need me Chester, hell you don't even want me." I began as I picked up the last few bits that were scattered around the living room.
"I do need you! You keep me clean!" "Clean? Clean?! You don't know the meaning of clean! I'm not stupid Chester! I know you don't come straight home after you leave mine, I know that you stop by Sams little den to make sure you get your fix, there are times when you don't even make it home because you're smacked off your fucking face! I'm done Chester!" I screamed as I threw open the front door and headed towards my car.
"Amelia please!" " Goodbye Chester." I whispered taking one last look and the drugged up shell of a man that was almost passed out leaning against the door frame.
Pulling up to my apartment I looked at the time and saw I had an hour to get to my first shift of my new job, I'm a paramedic as of an hours time it will be for the Chicago Fire Department, station house 51 to be exact. Rushing upstairs I threw on my uniform brushed my hair back into a high ponytail, a few strands not quite long enough to reach the elastic dangling round my face. Racing down the stairs I muttered a quick hello to an elderly woman who lives across the hall, I jumped into my car and sped of.
To say I was nervous was an understatement, I was bricking it, quite literally shaking in my boots. Creating my own breathing exercises I tried to steady my breath as I pulled up alongside the fire station, taking one last deep breath I grabbed my bag containing my clothes for the end of shift and got out determined to make a good first impression, from what I've heard firefighters are a family, paramedics included. Walking through the bay doors I could see that a truck was missing, squad if I'm remembering rightly, continuing through the empty forecourt I mad my way inside where I found someone pressing multiple buttons on a printer but seemingly not getting anywhere.
"Need some help there?" I asked with a smirk as I watched the man become increasingly more angered by the stubborn machine.
"Uh, no, yes, maybe, I don't know anymore, stupid thing never seems to work right." He muttered while still pressing a colourful combination of buttons.
"What are you looking to do exactly?" I asked whilst making my way round to join him on the other side of the printer.
"I'm trying to make 2 copies of this sheet but the stupid thing just keeps beeping at me." He exclaimed throwing his hands up in the air, reaching over I pressed a couple of buttons and the printer began to do its thing, two copies of the paperwork appearing on the tray.
"Thank you, saved me a teasing from Cruz." He said as he collected his papers, "I'm Otis by the way, well Brian but everyone just calls me Otis." He smiled as he spoke, "Are you here for someone? Squads out on a call but everyone else is here." He said confirming my thoughts on the missing truck being squad.
"Uh, I'm actually looking for chief Boden, I'm Amelia the new paramedic." I smiled as I stuck my hand hand out receiving a firm shake from the man infront of me.
"Well then, welcome to 51! His office is just down here, I'll take you, nice accent by the way." He exclaimed as he began to lead the way to the Chiefs office.
"Thank you, I'm originally from England, moved here 6 years ago." I told him as we reached a door with 'Chief Boden' written across the blurred window, knocking on the door only milliseconds later a deep voice came through the door telling us to go in.
"Uh, Chief, this is Amelia." Is all Otis had to say before a look of recognition came across Chiefs face.
"Ah, yes, Amelia Parks here for the spot on the Ambo, let's hope you survive. I've just got a phone call to make then I'll introduce you to the rest of the house. Otis gather everyone in the briefing room, Amelia if you just wait outside I'll be with you in less than a minute." He told us, with a nod of his head we made our way out of his office.
"What did he mean if I survive?" I asked, I understand that being a paramedic with the fire station has greater risks than in the emergency room, but still.
"Let's just say the last two people on ambo with did not get along with our PIC Brett, or the rest of us for that matter, but I can almost guarantee you'll be fine." He told me with a smile before walking away down the corridor.
Not even two minutes later the door to the Chiefs office opened and he appeared with a smile on his face. "Miss Parks, let's go get you introduced." He smiled as he began to walk down the same corridor that Otis left through, scurrying up behind him I tried to hide my nerves and control my breathing.
"If you could just wait out here until I gesture towards you." He said, well, more like stated. Nodding my head in understanding I stood by the door so that I could see and hear everything that was happening.
"51, I know we've not had much luck in our paramedic position recently, but we have a new recruit." Chief said as multiple groans and mutters arose from the firefighters that were sitting opposite the chief. "Now, before you jump to conclusions, I believe she is going to be just fine." He said as he raised his arm toward the door, taking it as my cue I opened the door and walked in looking much more confident than I felt inside.
"Hi, I'm Amelia Parks but you can call me Lia, and I will be your new paramedic on 61." I smiled as I looked over the faces in the crowd.
"English, nice. Sylvie Brett! I'm the paramedic in charge, also known as your partner, I am so pumped to have another woman to work with! No offence Kidd." She added as a 'hey' of offensive came from the only other woman in the house.
"It's nice to meet you!" I smiled as she embraced me in a hug.
"Right, down to business, this is Stella Kidd, the other lady at 51." She introduced first.
"It's gunna be nice having someone else here to help tame these men." Kidd smiled.
"These are the Truck and engine guys." She paused as everyone introduced themselves. "And at the back there we have Squad." She finished as I looked over at the men, one in particular catching my attention with his dark eyes and hair, his eyes held mine as Capp nudged his arm prompting him to introduce himself.
"Lieutenant Kelly Severide, welcome to 51." He smiled at me. "Nice to meet you" I replied feeling the blush starting to build.
"Right, let's go to the rig and I'll show you we're everything is and just get you acquainted basically." Brett smiled causing me to tear my eyes away from the mesmerising lieutenant. "Yeah, sure." I smiled as I followed her out.
This is going to be interesting.
