All eyes were on me.
I knew I would have to tell them all eventually, but now did not feel right. I told them the basics.
"Well, the reason I can do that is because, like you Percy, I went through Tartarus and unlocked a uh, special, ability." I started. Realization dawned on all of their faces. "You did not go through Tartarus." Clarisse said in disbelief. I nodded and said "Was in there for a year." I tried to keep my voice even as I saw it all in one blinding flash. I stared at the ground and keep my eyes big. I felt tears form so I quickly blinked them away.
Annabeth and Percy teared up when I said that, not bothering to blink their tears away. "Why were you in there?" Piper whispered. "Someone had to close the doors again. Octavion pushed me in." I stated bluntly. All Hades broke loose. Leo quieted everyone down and then said "Wait, how old were you?" I paused and then said "Nine." All Hades broke loose yet again. I heard the occasional "I'm gonna kill that kid." and the "I'm so sorry"s Honestly, I was done hearing that response.
The room started to spin. Why do I feel like this? Why is the room purple? Why am I swaying in my chair? Why is the room silent now? Why is everyone starring at me? Do I have something on me? Am I making a weird face? Suddenly the world turned black.
I lay still. Agonizingly still, which was not good for an ADHD demigod. I stayed like that for what felt like eons. I suddenly felt an immense shot of pain all over my body. I shouted an unheard plea. The pain stopped after a little while. My vision shifted; I was now back there, in Tartarus.
I saw the mother of all monsters, Echidna. She was half a nymph with glancing eyes and fair cheeks, and half again a huge snake. She ate raw flesh which is bad news when you had to battle her. Echidna was a scary, foul beast. She did not care about anything, not even her offsprings, for she knew that we, as ruthless demigods, would slaughter her children in time. She saw us as murderers, but we saw ourselves as protectors of mankind. Echidna was a difficult monster to battle. I almost didn't make it. If I faced her again now, that would be different.
Now I am more trained, better at fighting and in a better mental state than I was when I faced her. Echidna is the daughter of Tartarus and Gaea. I still find the fact that they worked together at one point mystifying and horror filled. Imagine the chaos they could have unleashed. I watched as I battled the mother of monsters. She slithered around me, whipped me with her tail.
I slashed when I could and stabbed when I got the chance. She tried to bite me, poison me, do anything she could to kill me. I remembered how she was killed before. She was killed in her sleep by Argus, the hundred armed security guard.
As I fought the mother of monsters, my goal was to tire her out. Then I could strike her and kill her with my dagger. And so that was what I did. She said I was a worthy opponent, one of the only ones actually. I stabbed her right through the heart, which was a bad thing as well as a good thing. The good part was that she died instantly. The bad part was that she cursed me. She wished that I felt the same pain she felt in her dying moments.
As I fought the arai later on, I felt my own Imperial gold dagger pierce my own heart. I discarded that memory at the moment. Before Echidna died, she whispered in my own ear and said "The same knife you used to pierce my heart shall someday return the favor to you." I thought that that was her cursing me, but I am not sure sure anymore.
I pondered over what she said throughout the rest of my trip in Tartarus, and I still think about it today. As I re-watched the battle between me and the mother of monsters, I thought again about that line. Had she been warning me? Had she been cursing me? Only time will tell.
I remember Echidna getting a lucky bite near the end of the battle. She bit the lower calf on my left leg. I bellowed in pain and finished the battle. After the battle was won, I inspected the wound. The poison was moving fast. I then used my powers to remove the poison, which I really don't recommend by the way.
The battle came in bits and pieces, all out of order. As I watched, I felt a cold pair of hands wrap themselves around my waist. I hung limply in this persons arms as they rushed me away. Probably to the infirmary. I can tell that the hands are a boys, for they are larger and bulkier than a girls are. This action was completed in the real world, not in my dream. It was such a weird feeling.
I heard the sounds of reality as well as the whispers of the battle that I was watching. I strained my ears to hear the discussion occurring in real life. I heard Percy say "I don't know what happened. She just started to sway back and forth in her chair and then collapsed. I grabbed her and ran here." I then felt him set me down on the bed. Suddenly I was yanked out of watching the battle in Tartarus and was back in the infirmary. I was still outside my body, but I was watching what was happening.
A boy was looking me over to see if I had any injuries. "She doesn't seem hurt. There doesn't seem to be any poison in her system. I don't know what to say." the boy said. "Is there anything you can do, Will?" Annabeth asked.
Will sighed and said "I don't know. Maybe I can-" but he was cut off. There was a large explosion outside that shook the room. Everybody ran outside to see what was happening. Oh no......the Roman's had arrived. In full battle armor.
