her throat and sat straighter in her seat. Tom watched her slowly form back into the serious, cold girl again. He had a feeling that only he had ever seen the soft side of her that leaked through the cracks of her mask– something he was oddly satisfied with."Shall we begin our lesson then, Tom?" Evelyn spoke as a lazy smirk twisted itself onto her lips.
"I suppose so," Tom conceded, ready to begin again with the advanced magic he had only gotten a taste of the previous school year.
"Since our last practice was cut short with your simply atrocious temper," Evelyn started with a pointed look at Tom as she straightened, "I have decided to compromise with you since you clearly don't understand the concept of legilimency."
"How caring of you," Tom sneered.
"Quite," Evelyn continued. "A skilled legilimens understands that one can not read minds if they can not protect their own. You must be able to build a barrier around your mind to protect your thoughts from those meaning to root around in them."
"Would I not just feel them entering my mind and shut them out?"
"Have you ever felt me inside your head?" Evelyn shot back.
"No," Tom grumbled.
"Precisely," Evelyn grinned. "However, for less talented legilimens than myself, there is a way to detect if someone is prodding at your head."
"How are you not detected?"
"With extreme difficulty for those not trained in delicacy," Evelyn divulged. "Even when done with care, there is always a slight prick at the base of the skull that someone can feel. Like a pinch, or like someone is pressing their nail into your skin."
"What if one is not trying to hide themself from entering your mind?"
"Then one can rip into your head with the savagery of splitting a skull open. The pain can be indescribable."
"Has this ever been done to you?" Tom pressed, wanting to know more about Evelyn's weaknesses.
"Unrelated, let's move forward," Evelyn dodged the question completely. She took her time roaming her eyes up and down Tom's figure. She was so slow in observing him that he suddenly felt self-conscious– even though he had never felt so before. "Have you ever been relaxed, Tom?"
Tom didn't hide the rude, confronted face he made. Evelyn was asking a very simple question, but he had the feeling Evelyn had learned everything she needed to know about his answer by just observing him for those few seconds.
