up with a strange feeling in his chest. It made him uncomfortable and uncharacteristically embarrassed. He dressed eagerly as he thought about his first class of the day.

More specifically he thought of the girl who would be waiting for him. Evelyn had surprised him last night with her attentiveness and honesty. She was so sure of everything she said. Tom had found himself wanting to hear more.

Evelyn wasn't at breakfast, but that didn't surprise Tom. She rarely attended any meal. He ate fast and didn't wait for his followers to finish before he headed towards Transfiguration. Tom had this feeling that something was going to happen today and it made him excited.

When he reached Transfiguration he slowed when he didn't see Evelyn waiting outside the door for him. She usually was in the same spot every morning, smoking a cigarette without any care for anyone around her, but she wasn't there. Tom wondered if he was simply too early, but the halls were crowded with students and Evelyn always was there before him. He contemplated waiting outside the classroom for her. Scolding himself for his stupidity, he instead made up his mind to just go inside.

Tom was more glad than ever that he had not waited for Evelyn was already inside. She sat at the far side of the room, not at their usual table. It was as if looking at a wilted version of her. The way she slumped was so unlike her usual straight, confident posture. Her elbow was propped on the desk and her hand rested in her hand. The closer Tom got, he noticed how pale she was and the dark rings under her eyes. She did not look up at him as he approached, completely it seemed in her own world.

As he approached her desk he decided that he wasn't going to sit next to her. She seemed out of it and he did not want to seem overzealous toward her. He moved by her and sat two rows behind, to seem as indifferent to her as possible. A bit disappointed, but too stubborn to admit it, Tom unpacked his supplies in preparation for the beginning of class. Malfoy arrived right as the final bell rang and with clear confusion picked between the two open seats. It did not take long before Abraxas slid into the seat next to Tom instead of the empty seat next to Evelyn.

Tom tried to focus on the start of class. Transfiguration, although interesting had never been a highly enjoyed subject because of Dumbledore being the professor of it. Slytherin also had the luck of sharing this class every year with Gryffindor, whom Dumbledore showed clear favoritism. Tom despised Dumbledore for he was the only teacher that looked at him with any hint of suspicion. He had been the one to know of Tom's behavioral problems before starting at Hogwarts. Although Tom had done a complete renovation of himself when he came to school, Dumbledore had never forgotten Tom's childhood cruelty. Nosy, insufferable fool.
Tom focused his attention on Evelyn instead of Dumbledore when he began the lesson. This version of her he had never seen before and it unnerved him that she seemed so strong the night before and now so weak.

He tried to pull his attention away from her to watch Dumbledore explain the wand movements to turn their dinner plates, which were being passed out by two Gryffindor girls, into mushrooms. He could imagine Evelyn rolling her eyes at the simplicity of the lesson.
