"she was the type of person who'd explain how she was going to stab you in the front before she actually shoved the knife in... and you'd let her.
she'd probably even pass the knife to you so you can shove it in your own chest...and you would."

t o m r e l a x e d again as if nothing that had just occurred bothered him in the slightest. Although he had to question just how close he had gotten to seeing the demon that lurked beneath Evelyn's pristine surface. He would never admit that he was ever grateful for anything, but he was a bit relieved that she had changed the tense subject.
"Yes, we may proceed," Tom said as he closed his eyes once more.
This time he was determined for Evelyn not to pick such a sensitive memory. He was more ready when she entered his mind. The pin-prick happened a few seconds before he switched right into a memory.
He thought about first blocking her out entirely, but it had already been too late for that. Instead, he felt the moment she tugged at one memory and he pulled it just out of her reach. It plunged them both into a different memory. Not one he had picked, but it had been a small success not to let her into the one she had wanted.
The memory was not one he would have liked for her to see either.
It was right before the girl had interrupted them. Right before she had been murdered.
There he and Evelyn stood pressed firmly against each other. He could feel just how much he had wanted Evelyn in that moment. He knew she could feel it too.
She had been whispering to him in parseltongue. The delicious caress of her tongue against the words had made him wild with desire. The way it was one thing that he was better at than her had made that feeling overwhelming.
He grounded himself again. He did not want her to feel these things. He did not want her to know that he had felt like this. Memory-Evelyn was bent toward him, ready to whisper whatever taunt she had thought of. He took that moment to strike.
Tom pushed all his willpower into getting rid of the memory. Of pushing them back into the present. With surprising success, he opened his eyes to see them both sitting in front of the large bay windows.
"I am surprised you were not only able to direct me into a different memory but also able to remove me from one so quickly," Evelyn said, an underlying tone of disbelief clear in her voice.
"I'm a fast learner," Tom smirked, crossing his legs. He felt as if he had just tricked the master.
"Don't get so ahead of yourself, you still did not have any control over the memory," Evelyn tsked. She looked at him as if she was dealing with an over-exuberant child who had done nothing more than a simple task, the 'I'm much smarter than you' aura clear. "And I am not trying to discourage you, but I let you take back your mind. It is progress nonetheless."
