CHAPTER II~ fallen for me, the fallen angel
My eyes scanned the school precinct. First day and I already had that nickname?
I inwardly groaned. Word must spread quickly.
I could instantly tell the groups, the guys; all the same. Mouths gawping, eyes boggling, I sighed again.
The normal girls; I liked these the most. They didn't pay much attention to me, just smiled politely and carried on in their lives.
The admirers: they do just as their nickname states; admire. I didn't hate them, of course. I didn't hate anyone. They were just.. tiresome. They followed me around, always complimenting me, paying for me, helping me. I appreciate it, but it isn't necessary. I'm the same, 15 year old girl, just like them. I'm not the 'queen' or the 'angel.' I'm just me.
The green demons: that's just my name for them, of course. They always glared, spat and gossiped. They spread as many rumors as they could, and always tried to make my life a misery. I held my breath as one of them strutted up to me, with her three friends scuttling behind. The leader of the 'pack' came so close our noses were touching, and I could smell her minty breath. It was as cold as ice.
"You listen to me, sweet pea. I'm the leader, no, better yet, owner of this school. You do anything, anything at all to jeopardise that..." she paused, flicked her hair over her shoulder and looked back at me, "and you'll answer to me, and trust me pretty little darling. You won't be pretty when I'm finished." her mouth twisted into a phony sweet smile.
I took a death breath, and gave a genuine smile back. "Thank you for the warning," I nodded my head politely and disappeared into the lunch room, but I could feel her (and everybody elses) eyes boring into my back.
I sat down at the grubby table, carefully sipping my coffee.
"How do you do that?" Senka was staring at me, eyes boggling.
"Do what?" I asked, tilting my head.
"How were you so nice to that chic? Did you hear her accent, how fake could you get?"
I shrugged, then grinned, remembering one of my favourite phrases,
'Life is a game which has obstacles, you have to overcome them to win, hate and pettiness are things you have to jump over to win big.'
While Senka and Luna were trying to decode my speech, I felt an odd sensation. The hairs down the back of my neck were standing up, and I could feel a horrible, burning pain in my heart.
No. Not in my heart, above it. I clawed at the skin, panting heavily. I turned quickly to see the dining halls doors swinging shut. I heard the thump and I slipped off my chair, then everything went black.
I squinted my eyes, trying to see through the peculiar yellow-blue light. I heard faint beeping, shoes clipping against tiled floors, then the smell. I realized where I was, and snapped my eyes open.
Senka, Luna and Ebony were leaning in closely, watching, their eyes intent. When they saw me, they leaned back sighing with relief. Me, on the other hand, shrieked slightly. At least I tried to, but all that escaped was a hoarse grunting sound. My hands clasped my throat, puzzled.
Senka and Luna had disappeared, no doubt to reassure everyone waiting that I was alright. However, Ebony had stayed with me. It was a 'rule'.
"You won't be able to talk for a month," she explained, her huge black eyes sad, "the doctors don't know what happened, there hasn't been a case like this before."
Seeing as I couldn't speak, I tried to mouth the question to the best of my ability.
What happened?
"You'd blacked out on the floor, shivering. You were coughing up blood, and your skin had turned..." she trailed off, shaking her head, her neat, dark eyebrows knitting together, "..white," she finished, her voice dropping to a whisper.
Her eyes were enormous, filled with concern. This was the most she'd ever said, she was always muttering and mumbling. She was serious, and she was seriously worried about me.
Something was wrong.
Senka and Luna returned, their faces grave. A mob of my admirers flooded in, mixed in with the huge group of boys who had 'fallen for me, the fallen angel,' cheesy, I know. It was their catchphrase, I have to admit, I did snicker when I heard it.
My admirers' eyes were shining, still wet. I could see the wet marks down their cheeks, as they sobbed. I heard cries of 'I thought you were dead!' and 'I'm so happy!' and I couldn't help but smile. They, too, were genuinely concerned for my well being. I glanced back at Senka, Luna and Ebony, and my smile quickly fell from my face. They were on edge, full alert. Their eyes were darting around the room, scanning everyones faces.
Searching.
I suddenly straightened up, watching them. They were so beautiful, they looked like wolves on the hunt, sniffing, listening, searching.
Senka cocked her head to one side, then sprinted out the room, Luna hot on her tail. They were so graceful that they no longer looked like wolves, they were more feline.
Ebony was pushing people out the door, eyes frantic. Her slender delicate frame was no match for the pulsing crowd. Some of the boys admitted defeat, surrendering to her beauty. The girls only had their eyes set on me.
I was confused, and a little scared. I had known them for less than a day, yet they were fighting for me already. I was used to people loving me, but it had never been this strong before. They were willing to worship the ground I walked on, I was their idol.
It definitely scared me.
Nevertheless, I shook my head at them, mouthing no. They understood the message perfectly, turned and trudged out the door. I was stunned for a moment, as was Ebony. She dropped to the floor, cursing. The thumped the ground, then clutched her tiny lucky charm. She sat on her knees, chanting, for a second or two, then she screamed in exasperation.
"Why! Why?" she yelled at the floor, now pressing her forehead against the tiles. "Why now, she was meant to be 18! We had three more years, THREE!"
Tears were streaming down her face, splashing on the floor. She was choking on her breath, spluttering and cursing.
I was shaking, I had never seen Ebony like this. She was always so collected, so calm. She never raised her voice, in fact she kept it pretty low. Who was this I was watching breaking down on the floor?
She finally jerked her head up, as if she remembered something urgent. She glanced at me, a wild, animal look in her eyes. Her hair was a wild, tangled mess, splayed out around her beautiful, innocent face. She had never looked so vulnerable, so young. She jumped up, grabbed me, and swung me over her shoulder. We both paused for a moment, she had thrown me over her like I was as light as a feather. Since when did she have such inhuman strength? She yelped, as if she was in pain, then jumped out the hospital window, landing with ease. She paused, then back, then kicked off the ground with a jolt. Then we were flying, soaring through the air. Only for a short second though, as we soon landed and she was sprinting, the wind slicing our faces. It felt as if we were gliding, as the world zoomed past. I blinked, shocked and stared at her. She didn't notice, and her face was set in a grim determination. I coughed into my hand, then I saw it.
Blood.
I freaked out, this was the last straw. I'm surprised my head didn't physically explode, however, it did mentally. I completely blacked out, again.
