CHAPTER III~ ash hair, brown eyes

This time, I kept my eyes shut. Instead, I tried to use my senses.

I strained my hearing, but everything was too loud. It sounded like... machines? Yes, machines. Machines and people shouting. The only thing I could distinguish were three sets of breathing next to me. I snapped my eyes open, and quickly took in the scene. We were in a room of some sort,  people in dark overalls and women in skin tight leather suits scuttled across the room. People yelled instructions across the huge hall, barely heard over the clattering. Huge, oily machines towered above us, like giants in the sky. I coughed, coal dust hung in the air like fog, clinging to the walls.

A woman clipped over to me, her heels echoing on the metal floors. She had a tight face, with blonde hair tied so tightly back her skin was stretched over her scalp. She resembled a skeleton, and I shrank back as she approached. She stared at me briefly, her icy blue eyes harsh, before they flickered to the screens and charts next to me. She skimmed through the pages, jotting something down every so often. Then she unclipped some of the needles sticking into my arm (which I hadn't noticed) and sat my bed up.

"Hello, my name is Eira. I am Ash's assistant."

Ash? Who's Ash? Eira's voice was as cold as her name.

"Ash will be joining us shortly, so meanwhile feel free to ask me, or your Protectors, any questions." She perched on a chair, folding her legs as well as she could in her little skirt.

"Protecters? Who? What?" I slurred, whatever drugs they'd given me hadn't warn off yet. I jumped slightly, surprised that I could talk. I had a vague memory of someone telling me I couldn't. My breath rasped up and down my throat, it was so painful I knew that it wasn't a dream.

She didn't say anything, but she just nodded towards Senka, Ebony and Luna. She smiled, but it was as icy as her name. She held some kind of resentment towards me, but she didn't have to make it so obvious. I felt a sharp twang, and I inhaled quickly, wondering what this weird feeling was.

It felt like..hate?

No, impossible. I didn't hate anyone. I tried my best to be kind, and to like people. I tried smiling at Eira, but it was tight and awkward. What was wrong with me?

Senka, who had been watching me intently, somehow knew there was something wrong.

"Eira, if you would be so kind, would you please let us tell her some things in private?" She turned towards her, smiling. I could tell Senka didn't like Eira.

"I'd rather not, I'd prefer to hear everything myself." She returned the smile, only hers was more fake.

"I'm sure we would all appreciate it." Senka's voice had a slight edge. She was getting mad, I could tell. She still smiled, but it twitched at one end.

"Oh all right, five minutes." Eira sighed, grimacing. She got up, and flounced out of the room, leaving the door slightly ajar. I had a feeling someone would be eavesdropping. Luna noticed, strode over and slammed the door.

"I hate her!" Senka growled, scowling at the door. "Ignoring that fact, fire away,"

"Where am I? Why can I talk? Who's Ash?" I started but Ebony held up her hand. I noted that she had retreated to the corner of the room, and had nestled there.
