Chapter 4 - The False Identities

When Kelsi entered her hotel room, Kai was on the phone.

"I'm in trouble again," the voice said.

"It's been 3 years. Were my skills not good enough?" Kai asked curiously, but felt disappointed that his work failed to keep his client safe.

"It's not you. I made a mistake and now I need two new identifications. I don't care about the name or age as long its realistic and done quickly. I'm in a tight situation. I'll send our pictures"

"Everyone I help is in a tight situation, but it'll be done. I'll call you back later," Kai said ending the call and putting his phone away with a sigh.

"Who was that?" Kelsi asked sitting on the bed.

"One of the first people I helped back when we were just broken runaway teens," Kai responded.

"Ah, so that's why you care so much. You always remember your first," Kelsi jokes.

"It's not that. She was the first person I saw good in. Probably the first time I genuinely wanted to help for a reason other than money. You could say we're acquaintances if not friends," he explained.

"So, you're just going to help for free?" Kelsi asked curiously.

"Only this once," he finished with a smile.

...

Emmerson was finally leaving the hospital. He was quite eager and couldn't stop fidgeting. He immediately rushed to the mansion once he finished with all the hospital tests and paperwork. His father didn't want to continue their conversation until he was allowed to leave the hospital because there were many reporters who could have been near or others who could be eavesdropping. Once he arrived, he sprinted up the stairs completely ignoring the maids who told him to slow down because of his injuries.

"Father," he said formally, entering the room, "you said we could finish our previous conversation. The one about Alana."

His father looked up at him, nodding and motioning him to sit. Emmerson sat stiffly on the dark brown leather couch and clenched his fist to keep from fidgeting.

"While you were in a coma, the police performed a thorough investigation. They think Alana is working with the suspect if not the suspect herself," Mr. Anworth said finally breaking the silence.

Emmerson was dumbfounded, but nodded and motioned for his father to continue. He was raised to behave professionally around him.

"Almost all the other apartment owners have alibis and the ones who said they were at home were checked out by security cameras in the hallway," his father continued.

"But Alana was the one who called 911 wasn't she?" Emmerson asked defensively.

"Yes," his father responded in a monotone voice before pausing, "but she left right after and hasn't come to visit you. The fact that she's gone doesn't quite convey innocence. The police have placed a BOLO on her."

Emmerson cleared his throat and stood up to leave, "With all due respect, the accusations are ridiculous. I will find Alana and this misunderstanding will be cleared up."

"Son, there is one more thing," Mr. Anworth said, making Emmerson pause and turn around, "the investigation involved a search of your penthouse. There's money missing and I don't think it's a coincidence that it was the same day you left Alana alone."

"Are you implying she's a thief?" Emmerson asked slowly, gritting his teeth.

"Of course not, no," his father said finally standing up and going to the front of his desk, "I'm implying you made it easy for a trivial bitch to rob you. You got conned because you trusted someone and that worries me. How are you going to run a company if people as insignificant as her manage to take from your home."

Emmerson scoffed, "We were in a relationship. There's supposed to trust. It's not the same as running a business. Not that you would know."

His father showed no reaction which should've angered Emmerson more, but he was used to this by now. Shaking his head, he left the house desperate to find Alana. His head knew his father was most likely right, but his heart refused to believe she could do any of this. He needed to know the truth.

...

Kai was waiting in SkyRock Square which was where the city had the most people. There were tall business buildings and tourist areas such as SkyRock Tower and Sky Palace. Both Castelda Industries and Anworth Pharmaceuticals had a couple of buildings in the area. In the center, was a huge fountain with a marble boulder in the middle which had the city's name engraved on it. Workers were enjoying their lunch sitting at the edge of the fountain while secretaries, assistants and interns rushed back into the buildings with their bosses' meals or even some files. Kai sat at one of the benches surrounding the fountain, waiting. He knew he would be easier to spot because of his thick red hair that always stuck upwards.

"Kai!" the girl said approaching him.

"It's been a while," he said smiling.

"You're ... not as scrawny and short as I remember," she joked but sounded surprised.

"Yeah I know right," Kai said laughingly, and flexed his muscles which made Eliza snort,

Kai was at least a head taller than Eliza and probably had 30 more pounds of muscle.

"Here," Kai said handing her a package, "two identities like you asked. I used the pictures you sent me. Everything's there. New names, drivers licenses, passports, health cards and social security numbers,"

Eliza nodded, "How much do I owe you?"

Kai shook his head, "Maybe a favour in the future. My sister and I tend to stir up trouble."

Elisa smiled.

"Of course. You know where to find me. Thank you," she said, hugging him, "I have to go."

She gave him one more smile before walking away.

Kai checked his phone and noticed a text from Kelsi which read 'get back to the hotel. We have a problem."

"A problem. Of course," Kai muttered to himself sarcastically.

He took a cab back to the hotel and eventually got to their room.

Kelsi was sitting at the desk on her laptop.

"What's wrong?" Kai asked sitting next to her and looking at the laptop's screen.

"Emmerson's stabbing," Kelsi responded.

"Yeah, pretty boy got stabbed. That's old news. Not our problem," he said getting up.

"It is our problem when I'm a suspect," Kelsi retorted which made Kai turn back.

"I'm sorry, what?!" he said, freaking out, "They think you stabbed him?"

"There's a BOLO out on me and Emmerson left me 82 voice mails and 52 text messages about it. Here listen to this one," she said, playing it on her phone.

"Alana, you haven't been answering my calls and I was wondering if you were okay. I'm out of the hospital now and people are saying you're a suspect. I don't believe them. I mean......you stabbing me is quite a stretch. I want to help clear things up so please call me," Emmerson's voice said, sounding stressed.

"Does he know about the missing money?" Kai asked.

"I would assume so," Kelsi said, "but none of his messages mentioned that. We need to leave."

Kai took a sharp breath and thought for a while.

"I have a plan," he said.
