Corbyn places a blanket over my shoulders and sits next to me with a marshmallow on a stick of his own. "You feeling better?" he asks me, I nod my head focusing on twirly the stick to evenly cook the marshmallow.
"Two years and three months ago today we came here," I announce catching everybody's attention.
"We stayed up and roasted marshmallows that night too," Kyle adds.
"Yea," a smile appears on my face as I remember that night, "and Mike almost lights the tent on fire," I share a laugh with Jea and Kyle.
"Who's Mike?" Jack asks.
"Is he the guy you were telling me about in the car?" Corbyn asks me, placing his hand on my knee.
"Mike is someone I really cared for," I reply answering both of their questions, "he's the one who wanted to come here, he convinced me to come, said I wouldn't regret it."
"The first few days were great, we had so much fun," Jea says smiling at the memories.
"When we went to the beach one day he proposed to me," the boys stayed quiet, just listened to me immersed in my story. "He said he didn't care when we were to get married, he justed wanted to know for sure that one day it would happen."
"What did you say?" Zach asks, eager to know.
"I said yes," I tell him, "I loved him, I still do."
"What happened to him?" Daniel asked.
"We went bike riding the day after, too the same path we took today," I start to explain, Jea sends me a look that tells me I don't have to continue, but I do. "We got to the top of the hill, I teased him about being scared so he raced me," I feel the moisture in my mouth start to disappear, "he sped off at at the bottom of the hill he turns back to me and didn't look at the road. I called out to him but it was too late and he crashed into the car on the road, I ended up crashing into it too."
"Is he okay? How are you okay?" Jonah questions, he confusion clear in his voice.
"I was in a coma for two years, but he didn't make it," I lower my head only to raise it again heading Jea hesitate to say something. "what were you going to say?" I ask her knowing she hasn't told me something.
"Well, Mike isn't dead," she says quietly with her head down.
"What?" I question furiously, "what do you mean Mike isn't dead."
"He's still in a coma," she answers quickly.
"He was in a coma?" I ask, "why didn't you tell me this?"
"We thought it would be best for you," she replies, I can tell by the look in her eyes that she didn't want to do it.
"Your chances of survival were low and Mike's are even lower," Kyle tells me, I nod before standing up leaving the stick and blanket where they fall. I turn around and walk back into the tent, I leave the doors open and fall onto the bed.
~.~
"We'll be right out here," Jea tells me rubbing my right shoulder.
"I know Jea, I'll be fine," I assure her and walk into the hospital room.
The door clicks shut behind me and I hear a familiar voice from around the corner say, "Hello?" I walk forward to find Mike's parents, his father still in the seat and his mother standing in front of the other seat. "Jack, sweetie it's been years since we've seen you," Ms Millard says embracing me in a hug.
"Yea," I say with a nod as she releases me, "I wanted to come to see Mike."
"We were over the moon to hear that you recovered," Ms Millard tells me, "It gave us hope."
"We were thinking about considering removing his life support at that time," Mr Millard tells me honestly.
"Once we heard you came throw that was the last we thought of that," Ms Millard states.
"We'll give you some time with him," Mr Millard says rising from his seat, he approaches me and pats my back as he says, "it's great to see you again kiddo."
I smile at them as they leave the room, I turn around and look at Mike on the bed, my family must have seen me like this day after day. I smile looking at him, "you always look so peaceful asleep," I say softly. "I'm so sorry I didn't come to see you earlier, if I know you weren't dead I would have. I knew going there was a bad idea, it's still your fault," light-hearted humour isn't really working to lighten my mood. "I'm in college now, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I've got some pretty good roommates, I made a few friends, I just wish you were there with me."I pull my necklace over my head holding the ring in my hand, "I miss you so much, Mike," I hold his hand, the ring between our hands. I feel the tears start to roll down my cheeks as I blink my eyes, "I love you more than anything Mike, please never forget that."
I wipe the tears from under my eyes, "Are you crying?" I hear his voice, a smile takes over my face my heart filled with joy. "where am I? who are you?" my smile and the feeling of joy left faster then it came.
"You are in the Hospital Mike," I reply to him calmly, "I'm Jack, a friend from high school," I feel my heartbreak all over again.
"Jack? Sorry, I don't remember you," He tells me honestly.
"That's okay," I lie, "I'll go get your parents," I tell him before turning around and leaving the room. Mike's parents, Jea and Kyle stop talking as I open the door, the eyes all on me.
"Are you okay?" Jea asks me.
"He woke up," I tell them, Mike's parents rush past me into the room.
"Then what's wrong?" Jea asks.
"He doesn't remember me," I choke on my words as the tears start before I finish my sentence, Jea instantly embraces me in her arms.
